Openly Gay Player in MLB system

Milwaukee Brewers Minor Leaguer David Denson has become the first openly gay active player on a team affiliated with Major League Baseball.

Denson reached out to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to tell his story with the help of former major leaguer Billy Bean.

The 20-year-old first baseman plays for the Helena Brewers in the rookie Pioneer League. Bean, Major League Baseball's first ambassador for inclusion, revealed he is gay after his playing career.

"Talking with my teammates, they gave me the confidence I needed, coming out to them," Denson told the newspaper. "They said, 'You're still our teammate. You're still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You're still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don't treat you any different. We've got your back.'

"That was a giant relief for me. I never wanted to feel like I was forcing it on them. It just happened. The outcome was amazing. It was nice to know my teammates see me for who I am, not my sexuality."

This is not an event, every one now is gay.

Now if he was transgender - that's the new buzz thing.

Hopefully his revelation doesn't negatively affect his advancement through the minors and he makes it to the majors if he deserves to make it. Great news for ESPN though. They got a new potential cover boy just as Michael Sam's "career" is dying down.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Because its a first time in History type of thing and it effects the bigger future by opening up oppertunities for similar people in smarts.

This is the kind of example Brett always needed.

That was one of the reasons in that link, yes. There are also more reasons.

I don't know why you're replying to him here, you really should've started a new thread.

Yeah, sorry I still don't care about who anybody chooses to sleep with. I do find people who use being gay as some sort of way to make money distasteful but that's not just reserved to the gays, but also African Americans, the kardasian, duggars, or whomever.

The article would label me a bigot fine whatever I've been called worse but I just think there is so much more in the world worth caring about the sexual orientation of a total stranger.

I will say one way in which the article is wrong is the talents of Smith and Collins. Both were allowed avenues to continue to their careers both failed due to talent. Which all that matters to me as a sports fan give me someone who can dunk the ball, score a goal, a touchdown and if he wants to sleep with men thats his business.

sure.
but take 3, maybe 5 seconds to understand why it is a big deal to come out of the closet. or take 3 minutes to read the article to understand how much homophobic discrimination still exists in the States.

i agree with you on the point where i couldn't care less if a player's putting his dick in a guy's bum or a girl's bum or both. it really doesn't matter. we aren't watching them on the court based on their sexual prowess or private life. but it helps to understand the huge challenges gay players have and why no one's really come out of the closet. hell, i remember what it was like growing up in the 80s and 90s and the homophobic slurs my friends and I used to tease our close friends. we also made life hell for a few people who ended up coming out of the closet. no one should spend their teenage years living in fear due to other people's ignorance. no one.

Look if the MIL player starts getting treated differently or badly then sure then I'll care about it. Just to be clear the response would be the same regardless of what reason the player was being discriminated for.

But I find it hard to care about something that hasn't happened. As far as you anecdote goes I too grew up in the 80's or 90's. In fact, it was not two to three years ago that I made a comment saying thats gay to a coworker not thinking much of it. Then my boss overheard and pulled me aside saying that maybe harmful. I then thought a little more about and understood where she was coming from. See when I grew up gay didn't mean literally "gay" it meant something bad or stupid happened.

A company charged you 10 cents for a cup (water). That was gay. I think we have to be careful not to label people ignorant based on the era they grew up in. Having malice in your heart towards a group is one thing being indifferent and inartful is another.

You find it so hard to care that you've made how many posts about this topic now?

Maybe, just maybe, no one actually cares that you personally don't care. Maybe, just maybe, it's important to other people and not you. Crazy, I know.
