Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
Being a camp guy leads to being a preseason guy leads to being a regular season guy.. Dowling was a high upside 7th rounder last year. Why couldn't he take the backup role? BTW I havent heard anything of Ross logging snaps at SS this camp, only FS next to Asante or Ras-I Dowling (the lesser Dowling, who only plays SS now). But more to the point, Ross has been logging a disproportionate amount of snaps behind Tevin McDonald and Jonathan Dowling. Maybe because his age he doesnt need camp as much as they do. But he also doesnt have any gtd money, a gtd role.. being semi-successful last year in no way guarantees him a roster spot with Del Rio and Norton.
Branch is long gone, cut in March. And Woodson was a PFF grade of -13.1 in the last 8 games with 15 missed tackles in those games. His last 6 games he hit no higher than 5 tackles. He was passed on a TON too. His saving grace was that he was borderline elite to start the season - he only allowed 7 catches out of 14 attempts (2 picks) and a PFF grade of +9.4. (keep in mind that the highest S grade last year was +7.4, and the lowest was -4.9 for reference of how outlandish both of Woodson's halves were). He simply might not be able to handle a full season, and I think that was why we pursued the S from GB this offseason as well.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
I meant to say "Allen and Ross", not Branch. I know Branch was let go and signed with the Chiefs. Ross has shown he has the ability and skill set to play both S positions and slot and corner. Being versatile makes him valuable. He has be logging more snaps than both McDonald and Dowling when they are all healthy. True non of what you said or what I have said guarantees any of them a spot in the new defense but past in-game production is a factor considered in decision making.
Like I said previously, it's the second week of camp with a new coaching staff that wants to generate competition at every position. Of course guys will be moving in and out of 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams unless they are established vets or stars. Even still they may get reps at other positions to cross train and to allow the coaches to get film on not only them in that position but how groups of players play together. Coaching in practice is a lot of trial and error. Especially when you have time to do it, like now in TRAINING CAMP.
Also like I said previously, C.Wood playing that high # of snaps at the age of 38 caused him to wear down in the middle of the season. But he wasn't thrown at more than usual in the last half of the year. In fact the only time he had more than 5 passes sent his way was the Buff game. I agree that he will definitely need more help this year in the back field which is why I glad we got Allen who was very durable at FS and we resigned Ross. I just don't see Dowling or Asante playing big roles over those 3 excluding injury regardless of training camp snaps.

C-Wood was playing in the box the second half of the season, kinda apples and oranges to compare his first half season with second half.

Wow was that DJ that gave up that big pass on the first play? Defense looks terrible so far... and Jelly is already sucking wind on the first drive:

No. It wassnt him but he made the tackle.
Good coverage by Carrie in that 3rd down in the red zone. That was offensive PI.
Carr should have looked off Crab on that 3rd down.
Whatever….should I make a preseason game thread? Not a lot of traffic here.

Too late for that.
That first drive defensively was horrible. Looking better now. I think Taiwan may have a role on offense.

I'm thinking Dyer and Taiwan will beat out Richardson.

I watched the whole game streaming and almost made a tread but I didn't know if anyone else was watching.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
They took advantage of our man defense on the first drive with some crossing routes and that fade. Really didn't look good for the secondary. But it got much better on as the game went on. We are gonna have trouble all year with slot Wrs. If this was a reg season game Austin would have murdered us. I was hoping to see Dockery or Hayden in the slot but we never got the right matchup. Think that is our best bet.
Heeney and Mcdonald looked like real players. Great late picks by Reggie again. Makes me sad we don't get to watch Debose return kicks. Orr, Ball and Shirley played well in the second half on defense. Heard Asante's name alot but he missed assignments and was late to the ball. Was hoping for more from him. Ross didn't play and the Dowlings both looked decent so we still have fallback in at safety.
Richardson and Dyer both looked like 3rd string backs so I don't think anyone gained ground. When Helu gets healthy he'll probably be the first off the bench and Jones will get spot duty. Wasn't able to watch closely enough to see them perform on special teams but that may decide a lot.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
Was it Tevin McDonald (UDFA S) or Dexter McDonald (7th rd pick?)
The good:
- our WR all did well
- our 1st string OL did very well
- Heeney has some serious potential
- Ponder looked solid w/1st team
- Walford will be our starting TE
- 2nd team defense
- Latavius Murray has stud potential
- Taiwan looks like a great gadget player
The bad:
- DJ beaten on 1st play
- watching Austin run wild on us on a screen play
- Carr and Cooper's miscommunication that turned into a INT
The ugly:
- Mario Edwards Jr was on skates all night long
- Ray Ray was overrunning everything

Absolutely make a thread.. I'd like to make one for every game, though I dont think I'll be posting during games except for roadies this year.

I think the hardest decision will be in the WR group. Holmes, Butler, Roberts and Durham all made plays. Streater hasn't even played yet and Harper will get some shine in the next games I'm sure. It's a nice problem to have.

Wanted Carr to look off King Crab on that 3rd down to end the first drive as well.

Heyden... what are the chances the Raiders starting CB is a guy claimed off waivers?

I think zero. It will either be Hayden or Mcgill. But I see why you would say that. I don't think their will be any waivers of quality at the position.

Re: DJ Hayden getting beat out by McGill
Watching the game now, DJ made some situational mistakes.. On the 4th down, he got called back but was supposed to close quickly to encourage a short throw. Instead he backed off too far.
The TD pass was ugly though. Gotta turn around guy.. But with McGill struggling too, I dont think we'll see any change soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some cap casualties in a couple weeks.
