Clarkson Named to Philippine NT

Post#1 » by durden_tyler » Wed Aug 26, 2015 12:12 am

Comments?

He still doesn't have a long-term contract but should this drive up his value? Scared of the injury risks? (See: Exum for Australia) Should this help his development (he's going to be some sort of go-to-guy, being the NBA player, along with Blatche, our naturalized player, in the roster.

P.S.

Half the Philippines, a basketball-crazy country, are Lakers fanboys; so if this happens 3/4 of the country will be Lakers fanboys :D

P.S.S.

i hate the Lakers but because of Nash (one of my favorite players) and Clarkson (by blood) i don't hate you as much in recent years :D

I like the idea of Clarkson playing for the philippines, BUT I HATE the fact that fiba asia takes place during our training camp. Terrible planning on their part. If the Philippines plays until the final day (meaning they finish in the top 8) Clarkson will miss our whole training camp and would likely miss our first preseason game. Fiba Asia championship game being oct 3rd and our 1st game is oct 4th.

There MUST be some understanding between the Lakers and Philippines that Clarkson can't play unless they're playing for an olympic berth. It'll look bad if the Philippines gets eliminated from the winners bracket and Clarkson jets back to the Lakers training camp, but that's the way it has to be.

Thanks. Forgive me but i don't remember any international player for the Lakers who played for their NT in recent years. Were you strict with them playing for their respective countries? Did management stop anyone from playing? Trying to gauge here if the Lakers are on the Mark Cuban side of things with regards to FIBA play.

And yeah, if Clarkson is not going to finish the tournament, better not start it. Only one spot (winner of gold medal game) will advance to Brazil Olympics.

Hoping you are wrong though. Local media is reporting here that Jordan has had his first practice today with the NT. There are reports too that our basketball federation have started talks with the Lakers organization.

So he joined training this evening?

I hope Clarkson forces SMC management to loan their players for him to consider joining the Gilas program. Philippines might be the only nation with so much politics in basketball.

With regards to schedule conflict, I think they can fix something where he'll only play during the qualifiers. And only play him for 25 minutes max.

I am cautiously in favor of Clarkson joining the Philippines national squad. There's a risk of injury, but as you said, it's positive PR for the Lakers organization. Besides, Pacquiao has been a huge supporter of the Lakers and Kobe over the years and I wouldn't want to piss that guy off. Speaking of Pacquiao, he often speaks of the power he draws from the support of filipino fans. Being in the filipino limelight should only motivate Jordan more. Good luck. Hope you make it to Rio next summer.

Pau Gasol? He played pretty frequently for Spain even in the latter part of his Lakers years, the Lakers asked to him to be in communication if he had any physical issues but never stopped him from playing. I don't think Lakers would have any issue with Clarkson either, it helps promoting the brand in a foreign country and he gets some organized game time even if its FIBA Asia.

To clarify, I'm not reporting that he is or isn't joining the NT. I'm just expressing my opinion on the matter. Sorry for any confusion.

If its early october, should mean he would be more fit than training camp fit. Plus he would be playing in a more competitive atmosphere since these games would actually mean something. And playing for the Philippine national team would give him more exposure in playing as 3. He would be as tall as some of the Philippine team's 4s.

Thanks for the clarification, i thought you had an inside info or something so i guess that is something positive. :D

Anyway, if he joins the NT he'll immediately be the primary scorer-- not too sure how that fits in his Lakers' play long-term but he'll most likely play the bulk of his minutes at the 2 maybe even 3 spot. We are the Land of Point Guards so he's got no room there. On a related note, in an interview with Andray Blatche, our naturalized player said that he's excited to see if Clarkson can join the team. On a side note, Blatche is overweight coming from his China stint, so we really, really need an NBA caliber player in Clarkson as i don't see us beating Iran or China with a fat Blatche :D

And I thought Chinese food was just awful. Maybe he drank too much in China.

he's young. He will be fine. Exum was just bad luck. Im glad he's playing internationally.

Sacre is on the Canadian squad. Pretty sure Rick Fox played for Canada, too. Ronny Turiaf played for France. I think Sasha played international ball, as well.

I like it. Anything that helps him develop is good in my book. Although I don't want him to get injured, the injury risk is not a priority for me because the Lakers aren't contending for a championship anyway this year, so I'm the "lets just do anything to develop our team" type of approach.

If we were projected to finish 1st seed in the west this year, and Clarkson was already in his prime, I would be strongly against it. Context in everything.

I'm all for Sacre on the Canadian squad and any squad for whatever matters. Just not so much for the Lakers squad. Play Sacre as much as you want, because you just be warming dat bench when you are in LA.
