Hennigan continues to use the D-league: Jordan Sibert

Do you consider it a wise financial investment to exploit the D-league as a training ground?

Yes: if even one player comes through this system, it was money well spent

No: D-leaguers are available to all teams and Orlando's investment is equally helping opponents (see Seth Curry)

Hennigan continues to use the D-league: Jordan Sibert

Post#1 » by drsd » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:28 am

Last year Orlando inked 4 players to training camp slots and pre-season games with no intention of having them in Magic blue. This sets a trend of creatively "over-paying" D-leaguers that have potential to develop. This keeps the development in house.

2015-16 shape up to be similar. Tyler Harvey, Melvin Ejim, and now Jordan Sibert, seem to be this year's experiment in player development.

Hennigan's experiments with the D-league as a AAA farm is very intriguing. Players "get paid" creating a level of loyalty. And as Erie is solely under Orlando's direction, the players get the playing time dictated from above.

I love that we have our own D-League team! Pretty soon every team is going to have one. It'll be almost like Baseballs AA and AAA systems. I hope they start to give us better protection on the players on our D-League team like in Baseball. That way we would've been able to keep someone like Curry

i guess i take a different view of your wording of "exploit".

Hennigan is paying his D-League players well, and using them to better the organization. No reason a player couldnt move from the D-League to the NBA roster if their player warranted it.

I think it's cool that the D-League exists because of what it does for basketball culture as a whole. Pathways to NBA playing careers are actually the least significant part for me. 2-3 years of semi-pro experience can be the bridge that a lot of young guys need to get them careers in coaching, personal fitness, and/or playing overseas.

As to what it does for the Magic, I'm pretty meh. I'm not opposed to spending resources on it, but I don't typically get excited about D-league prospects. People getting upset about Seth Curry, for instance, strikes me as kinda silly.

I think it's a fantastic resources and a wise way to have a hand in more than one pot
The future is bright 8-) Payton said. ``I just want to keep getting better and maybe one day I can be the all-time all assists leader for the Magic.’’

You never know when and where a good propect will come. Let's be realistic here if he didn't do this people would be criticizing him for not investing in player development.
