Re: Jazz fan with a simple Question
I'd definitely deal Dinwiddie for GS2017 #1 and BOS2016 #2. That's just too much value to pass on for a guy with some potential but an unknown future. No thanks to Burke, though, even in place of the #2. I love the guy, but he's a bum in the NBA.

reflectiveself wrote:so honest question. what is the value of Spencer Dinwiddie on your team? would 2nd round or 2 second round picks be enough? would you guys consider some kind of trade that won't take a core player?
also, what if any interest is there in trey burks? I know his value is not much right now. but I think it's more of a location issue and a team change may bring him back to life some.. nothing like playing for your home town.. I do like his heart. the guy never seems to give up I honestly think his ceiling is a backup but he could be a heart and soul for a team too.
Dinwiddie actual value is probably at 2 2nd rounders. however if you want to pry him for detroit, it probably be around a mid to late first rounder. FO is really high on him, and he showed a ton last season. If he ever gets his shot straight, he may eventually start contending for the starting roll. I'd caution you though, as dinwiddies success is also a product of SVG's sytem

This is where I'm at on Burke. I think he's in a Brandon Knight type of category on realgm, where it's become fashionable to say how bad he is. Dinwiddie was pretty awful in spots last season and would have been a bigger disaster if he carried the minutes load of Burke. The fact SVG went out and got Blake tells me he doesn't trust Dinwiddie with even the backup job.
I'd deal Dinwiddie for Burke and I know many Jazz fans would make that deal. Some would even toss us a second as well. But in real world, I honestly don't think you get Burke for Dinwiddie.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Jazz fan with a simple Question
The problem with gauging value in picks is that "a second rounder" is a HUGE range. It goes from 1 pick out of the first round to 1 slot from being drafted at all. I'd put his current value somewhere in the very late first rounder to early second rounder range.

Re: Jazz fan with a simple Question
The meaning we're adding to the Blake pickup isn't accurate. We picked up Blake to fill a hole on the team: quality depth at PG. Jackson is the clear starter. Jennings is hurt, and SVG has to plan for him NOT being ready at the start of the season or perhaps most or all the season. Dinwiddie may or may not be ready, but if there is an injury to Jackson or Dinwiddie, then we're left without a backup PG (see above regarding Jenning's injury), and that would be a disaster. Our team cannot survive without a decent PG.
So Blake may or may not beat out Dinwiddie, but in any event we had to have 3 known to be healthy PG's. SVG picked up the best available extra PG who fits our system. As to who is where on the depth chart - that hasn't been determined. The Blake signing was smart. He and Dinwiddie will duke it out - and that's good for our team.
If Jennings is our backup PG, then we'll take our time and develop Spencer and give him significant Grand Rapids time.

To be honest,if dinwiddie dosent look much improved from last season, then I dont see him beating out blake.Blake is actually a really good backup, who can man the starting spot for stretches.

exactly, i'd just like to add, we probably have the highest usuage of the PG position than any other team. so chances of injury at that position are more likely as well as the talent at that positoin. I am just happy its Blake and not JL3

I kind of disagree I mean Burke got a lot of minutes and shots consistently unlike Dinwiddie. It would seem like it would be harder to play good in very limited minutes and shots as a rookie than the other way around.

Re: Jazz fan with a simple Question
Dinwiddie had a few flashes of solid play... but what's most impressive was what he didn't do. He didn't make a lot of rookie mistakes. He didn't look rushed or over whelmed. He didn't look out of place. Certainly it's a loooong way to go from "didn't screw up" to "positively contributes", but for a rookie in limited action I was happy with what I saw. Especially out of a later pick.
That said I'd be OK flipping him for a GS 1st and BOS 2nd. Good value. Not sure why UTA would wanna do that though.

The fact that that the Jazz continued adding pgs to their roster after drafting Burke (hyped as the second coming of Chris Paul) suggests that organization has little confidence in him. They added Dante Exum, Bryce Cotton, and Raul Neto. There's reason to believe that Burke still won't start even after Exum's injury because Neto has been projected as more capable in running the offense.
Dinwiddie came off an injury that should have had him out for the whole season and proved he could run the offense. Burke couldn't run the offense. Burke was more of a scoring guard who couldn't score. I would Dinwiddie over Burke based on what I've seen thus far.
That being said, I believe Burke will have a productive career as a back scoring pg off the bench. I think his ceiling is somewhere between a poor man's Jameer Nelson and a poor man's DJ Augstin.

Re: Jazz fan with a simple Question
Burke is one of those guys - like most guys in this league - who has to find a great fit on a roster to play at all. If he isn't a high usage player, his question is whether his effective shooting percentage will be high enough to keep him in the league at all, since he just isn't capable of ever being a capable defender.
