Off Season Talk - Top 10 Hawks of the Last 10 Seasons

Post#1 » by PandaKidd » Thu Aug 27, 2015 5:49 pm

Interesting topic, considering how terrible FO drafting has been, the lean years, etc. Whats your list?

PTH just did a write up on 10-6.

5) Demarre Carroll

4) Paul Millsapp

3) Jeff Teague

2) AL Horford

1) Joe Johnson

Joe in his prime was probably the best offensive Hawk player since Dominique. He was a 5x All Star here, led us in scoring every season, led us in assist all except one season. I often wonder how good he could have been in his prime under a great coach like Budenholzer.

Horford's been the rock from the start. A shame we didn't realize sooner and build around him years ago.

Teague has blossomed into an above avg PG in a league filled with above average PGs.

Millsap is a perfect fit in our system and if he were 3 inches taller would be a franchise player with his strength and skillset.

Carroll benefitted more than anyone from a great system and spacing. His impact can't be overstated.

I dont see how you can put Schroeder in from basically 1 season as a backup with averages of 10ppg/4 AST.

Marvin Williams who i never really liked, surprised me when i looked at his numbers. They were no terrible. JJ, if his contract wasnt so bad, he was easily the best playing in the last 10-15 years. By FAR. His albatross was the 20+ million per season.

The same way I put Devin and Demarre in with essentially one big season each.

I also considered Hinrich, AL Harrington, Antoine Walker, Marvin, Diaw.

They didn't make the cut. H3ll...Zaza and Ivan the Terrible almost made the cut above those guys.

Dennis is a star...and he was fantastic as a starter in December and March.

By his criteria either of Mike Bibby and Zaza not making the list would be beyond criminal and I'd have to question the author's fandom for leaving them off. Flip Murray probably had a better single season than others being mentioned on here though.

This guy has backed himself into a hole, the top 5 has to consist of Joe, Al, Josh, Jeffrey, and then either Bibby or Zaza. You could say Zaza gets the nod because he played 8 seasons but by impact and stats Bibby should too. Based on having the shortest tenure and the fact he didn't separate himself statistically, DeMarre probably deserves to be left off the list to accommodate both Zaza and Bibby but I would gladly replace Chills with him to compensate.

So part 1-5 is up
http://www.peachtreehoops.com/2015/8/28/9219681/atlanta-hawks-top-10-players-10-years-part-2

I'll admit I had a total brain fart on forgetting to include Millsap but again, that had to do with his short tenure with the team despite the stats and awards but I can't say that I'd put him ahead of Teague at all. So yeaaaaa, DeMarre and especially Chills make some very questionable choices also then. Chills had 4 meh years as the 6th man but is being boosted for being there in the beginning and DeMarre is getting boosted for being likable......uhm Zaza is perhaps the most likable Hawk ever and Bibby sparked the beginning of the run of success.

Meh, I'd probably look to compile a list like this through a poll in the future. Rather have the multiple opinions than the discrepancies in selection criteria.

I think it says more about the franchise that you have to include ZaZa Pachulia in a top ten for the last ten conversation at all........... :noway:

I completely agree with this list, except that Joe is number 1 on mine: because he brought the franchise out of the cellar, and because he has twice the amount of all star appearances as Al (as a Hawk). Al will surpass Joe eventually, but not quite yet.

No Jamal Crawford? Or did he not play enough years in a Hawks uni?

My thinking as well. He played only two seasons for the Hawks but 13 more games, playoffs included, than DeMarre Carroll did plus won 6th man of the year during that stint.
