Grantland Logo rankings - *Spoiler* Pistons Suck

Post#1 » by dVs33 » Tue Sep 8, 2015 6:45 pm

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-definitive-nba-logo-rankings/

Saw this on the general board and thought it was interesting. I don't like posting there, so I bring it here.

Obviously these lists are subjective, but I certainly agree that Detroit's logo is painfully boring and deserves a poor ranking.
I do really like the proposed design though. It combines the automotive theme and the bad boys. Update the font and it would be nice.

What do you guys think of the list? and the awful pistons logo?

Eh not really surprised. Our logo has a classic look, but it also looks very simplistic. The teams below us (Knicks, Twolves, Nuggets, Kings) look great to me. Don't know why the Nets is 17 though :nonono:

Our logo definitely sucks, but I hated the horse and not a big fan of that proposed logo either. The whole automotive thing is actually kinda hard to work with. A "piston" or any other type of mechanical part is terrible. I'd rather just have a city skyline or something. Throw "Motor City" over/below it and call it a day.

I thought the Knicks logo is way too low.
I hate the team, but that's such an iconic logo.

They make some valid points. It's a pretty uninspired logo as it currently stands.

The thing about the Pistons is they have always had that Blue Collar aura . Our logo is simple , just like any blue collar worker. I am not oppose to changing the logo, i just haven't seen anything that makes me think, YES, this would be worth it.

Most of the designs i've seen try to be too modern, hip, swag etc. Just overall too much. i think if we want a logo that embodies our team today and teams of the past, we should continue to keep it simple but more thought out.

I do like our colors though

Pelicans have the worst logo by far. Any logo that has Pelicans in it is just a joke to me.

I agree with Lowe on one point....Bring back the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons logo.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Our logo and jersey design are absolutely terrible

When is Gores going to revamp the nasty font and generic logo?

Definitely have one of the worst logos in pro sports.

That proposed design is ten times worse too.

As someone that owns a Horse era Hill jersey, I think Lowe is too harsh on the current one. It ain't great but it's nowhere near as bad as some he has ranked higher like Wizards, Cavs, Rockets, etc.

I hate our logo.

I'd love a take on something like that, incorporate Pistons into the old Bad Boys skull & crossbones.

The league contracted Fox to design a new Pistons logo in the 1990s, when they eventually settled on a flaming horse head perched above exhaust pipes. Fox drew a lug nut atop crisscrossing wrenches, meant to evoke a skull-and-crossbones flag, and placed them within a circular saw blade. I don’t love the jagged, arcade-style font, but this could have evolved into a badass logo.

So they chose the horse over the wrenches and nut on a saw blade. Can't say I blame them, even though neither was a good option. I think the Pistons are very likely to get a rebrand when Nike takes over in a year or two.

It is a pretty lame logo, but I don't agree with a lot of the spots of the rankings. I feel like the Spurs should be up more along with GSW. I do like the suggested Pistons logo!

That look pretty bad ass. I like our colors though so how can you blend that in with it.

I think if you take away the saw blade and use a simplified modern font, the wrenches design is a good concept.

I really have no problem with those rankings.

Our logo stinks. As they correctly point out, at least the old school Pistons ball logo has some residual nostalgia going for it. The one we have now is like a Walmart knockoff of that.
