Re: The Andrew Wiggins Thread
Thought it should be noted that all tho not a great play maker Wiggins has been getting better as this tournament goes at finding teamates. Its odd how poor FIBA has been tracking stats. Wiggins had 4-5 assists this game with potential for 2-3 more missed conversations, fiba had him down for 1!. That wouldn't fly in the NBA where ppl get paid big money for stuffing the stats sheet. Guess that's why this tounrmement is unique, not playing for stats, just wins.

While I believe that FIBA basketball is a bit too strict when it comes to tracking assists I think the NBA is too easy on them. Not to get off-topic here but I really don't see why it's credited as an assist if a player passes to a big man who then makes a clear cut post-move on his own to beat the defender. Yet, the guy who had made the pass is still credited with an assist, albeit he had very little to do with the actual scoring move.

I see highlights of guys getting an assist when the guy who makes the basket takes 2 dribbles. I personally don't think those should count.

Completely agree. There's so many times I'm watching Rubio highlights and see an assist he was credited with and it blows my mind.

Re: The Andrew Wiggins Thread
It depends entirely on the pass I guess. If you pass it to someone on the wing who is stationary and he proceeds to size up his defender before making a move, that shouldn't be an assist. If you hit him as he's taking off and he takes two dribbles on the way to the rim I think it should. Your good pass allowed him to carry momentum and beat his man. It's the same thing in the post. I'm a tall guy, so I spend a lot of my time playing near the basket. Nothing frustrates me more than working my ass off to get position right where I want it and then having someone just lob the ball in carelessly. I have to shift to get the ball and lose my leverage. Good post entry passes set up the moves a post player will make and deserve assists. If you just lob it in and the guy makes five dribbles backing someone down, that is not an assist.

The proper criteria for determining whether a pass is an assist: Did the scorer do anything unexpected?

That "is the next wing superstar already in the league?" thread on general board is hilarious. The Wiggins hate is reaching full force.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Some of the criticisms were very legitimate, and you have to think about who they were comparing him to. Ultimately it's all just talk and Wiggins will need to be the one to settle the debate once and for all. If historical trends mean anything, this year is probably a very big year in determining just how good Wiggins will end up being.

Yes every young player has concerns, but it's more the way they decide to go about belittling Wiggins potential by comparing him to Lebron or KD. Choosing to ignore the eye test when it comes to evaluating and making claims that things like handle or shooting can't improve. The whole thread is people discussing why Wiggins ISN'T the next one.
It's just rare you see a player who people are so quick to tear down. That's how you know he's going to be great.

I dont think its actually too bad minus a couple of the 6er guys.
Tsherkin has a pretty good take. Him and Undefeated on the Raptor board know their stuff and are generally pretty grounded.
Saying Wiggs compares favourably to a young VC is a helluva compliment. When VC was pissed, there wasnt a player in the league that could touch him. And when VC was Mr. Nice guy, he was still an excellent player.
If Wiggs can ever get that killer mindset more consistently, the Wolves will be a mainstay in the playoffs, especially with another possible all league guy in KAT.

Re: The Andrew Wiggins Thread
1. 99% of the general board should be ignored, as you probably know.
2. There are legitimate knocks on Wiggins, but a lot of that thread is BS. I don't buy that he doesn't have a #1 scorer mentality. I guess neither Rose or Duncan had that mentality either. The double standard that he was a chucker and had free reign to shoot as much as he wanted but also doesn't have the #1 scorer mentality is a bit funny. I guess LaVine has the mentality to be a #1 scorer because he was taking shots from Wiggins.
3. He needs to improve his handle, but reading that thread, you would think that he handles like Brew.
4. He showed such nice improvement throughout the year, I almost think that it is a bit unfair to lump his entire season together.

He seems pretty "pretentious", if you ask me.

Well, yeah. The thing with the Rudy Gay and Demar Derozan comps is that Wiggins in the last 50+ games last year was performing at their career average level. So either the last 50 games were a mirage or you don't think Wiggins will improve off of his 20 year old rookie season.

I don't think you understood that he was saying he does think that Wiggins will improve.
