Not only is he a top-flight shotblocker:

...but he's also got some range on his jumper,

and he's a respectable FT shooter (career 70.5%)

...if this goes through, certain contract-year Magic bigs, might need to watch their backs... Image

Steismamam: Defended FG Attempted 1.7 (Players are taking an average of 1.7 shots against him making 0.7 and judging by the fact that he didn't play much in Toronto, it looks like his "defensive numbers" were largely against scrubs)

Dedmon: Defended FG Attempted 5.9, Defended FG Made 2.4

pfffft... Stiemsma = Plodding training camp fodder.

His career foul rate is actually identical to Dedmon's. His shotblocking rate, however, is superior to Dedmon's.

Dedmon doesn't get big minutes either, and I'm fine with that. If either could block shots and/or protect the paint without hacking they'd get more minutes and may even be worth starting on some decent teams. That kind of defensive improvement is easier said than done though. "Top-flight" shot blockers tend to block shots without assaulting opponents.

As for which player I give the edge to... I'd easily pick Dedmon as he could still improve in certain areas over the next couple seasons. Started playing ball later in life, significantly less NBA experience, and this season he'll be the same age Stiemsma was as a rookie four seasons ago.

In Boston, Stiemsma was a 26 year old rookie playing on a contender. His block rate was very good, but his foul rate was horrid at 10 fouls per 100 poss. But hey, at the time you could give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he would improve. Well, that never happened... a couple seasons later in New Orleans at age 28, his block and foul rates were very similar to Dedmon's this past season (his rim protection figure was much worse, too). Who cares about career block numbers when it's declined with each season - and he's still a foul machine. The window for defensive improvement is shut for Stiemsma as he's about to turn 30.

And the list when you add ≥ 8.8 fouls per 100 poss to the filters...

In today's NBA, paint protection is more important than how many shot blocks per game a player averages. Versatile switching is what elite defenses are founded on - especially ones with a big that can extend out and recover (see Rudy Gobert). How is Steimsma at that? Because that is the key reason Dedmon made O'Q expendable. That's pretty much Dedmon's bread and butter coupled with relentless energy.

Rebounding is also very important. Dedmon per36 = 12.3 RPG ; Steimsma per36 = 8.0 RPG....don't see that being a reason Steimsma takes minutes from Dedmon either.

Dedmon for sure can run in the faster paced system Skiles has hinted at using? Steimsma maybe I don't know...but you know what Magic big currently can't do any of the above?
