If nothing else, maybe he's a candidate for DC if the 49ers defense play poorly.

As for Chip Kelly, maybe his approach is hitting the wall, as it kind of did at Oregon. They get elite athletes and they can roll up crazy numbers against most teams but when they face a physical team which is as talented, they haven't won too many big games.

Kelly doesn't have a recruiting advantage over most teams. Not sure how much of the roster he turned over in his first season. He presumably had a lot of Reid's players, including the strength of the team, the OL.

But he's thinking he can run east west and turn the corner with Murray and that line but they're giving up a lot of tackles for losses running parallel to the LOS about 5 yards back.

So Kelly may never be more than a coach good enough to get his teams into the playoffs, earn a bye. But that style of football, especially the offense, may not be good enough to go all the way. The defense was suppose to be the best he's had over there but Maxwell is turning into an expensive FA bust. Again probably also the wrong kind of CB for that system.

Not a fan of Chuck Pagano as a lot of people - but I have to admit Ryan Grigson has done a terrible job supplying him with talent. Especially on the defensive side.

It's like Polian-Dungy-Manning part deux. Polian rode Manning's coattails for years. I hope Jim Irsay doesn't fall for the same clown show with Grigson, and hire someone that can actually give Luck some talent.

Actually Pagano's situation isn't unlike Harbaugh's situation with Baalke. Polian and Grigson doesn't seem close like Jed and Baalke but otherwise, it's a clash between the coach and GM about personnel.

Pagano's had some success, each year going further in the playoffs, which is why some picked them as contenders in the AFC.

But it looks like they're not going far this year so coach or GM or both are probably going to be gone.

If he's healthy Pagano should be able to get a job somewhere.

Riding Andrew Luck's jock.

Like I said, Grigson hasn't given him enough talent on D, but his scheming and development have also been putrid.

The play calling sucks. How do I know? Because it didn't work. I know because I watched the game from my TV. There's no chance it was just bad execution or mediocre QB play; that never happens in the NFL.

Kaepernick played like crap (at least when it still mattered), but since the aforementioned play calling was bad and the OL was bad, Kaepernick played great! Deserves the game ball. 3.97 YPA is amazing. Most QBs would've been lucky to break 2 YPA.

For the record, I believe the Kaep diatribe and the play calling criticism discussion are two separate things. I've steered clear of the former. I don't think we have enough data in 2015 to say how he's trending this year.

With regards to play calling let's look at MNF. I think the vast majority of people would take Luck over Kaep. Luck looked horrible Monday. He was running for his life almost the entire game. He had 3 or 4 turnovers and a low QB rating. We can't conclude Luck is horrible from that game. We can't conclude the play calling was perfect and the players were the issue.

I was completely amazed they didn't change something around. Why not go shotgun to buy him more time? I didn't watch the whole game but I found it amazing that Gore was off the field on several third downs. Despite his age Gore is still one of the best pass protecting RBs in the league. Why was he not on the field to help protect Luck? If your line is failing call some plays that give you a better chance to be successful. They had a rookie RB in on pass blocking. I doubt he was a better option than Frank.

That's questioning play calling and I don't think it takes some special training or experience in the coaching profession to ask those pretty simple questions. However using the argument I'm not capable of commenting on play calling I should assume everything was designed perfectly and the players are simply buffoons or the QB sucks. For some reason I can't suggest that if your team is being dominated at the line that the coaches might deserve criticism for not changing the play calls or trying something different. I just don't buy into that.

They may have designed awesome plays but if they aren't working based on how the game is playing out, then it doesn't really matter. Change your calls, put your players in the best possible situation to execute based on what's happening during the actual game. There's nothing controversial or out of bounds about questioning coaches or play calling. Should it be done all the time? Is it always issue? Is is always correct to criticize? NO, NO, and NO. But it's not some sacred cow either.

It's funny you say that. This is what I posted on Friday:

Are the Colts going to be like us? After we lost in the NFC championship game, and then lost in the Super Bowl, the assumption was maybe win the Super Bowl. Instead, we lost the conference finals the next year. The next year we had a down here and fired our coach.

The Colts went from wildcard loss to division loss to conference loss and the assumption was going to be the Super Bowl. I know it is only one game and they have had stupid regular-season games before, but the Colts didn't look very good in week one. I think I see them losing in the conference finals again. Obviously, Luck is there to stay and they will always do well, but the next year, will they fire their coach like Denver did? (Saying that the coach underachieved with a Manning-led team.)
