ESPN's Future Power Rankings. No. 27: Detroit Pistons

The Pistons are betting their future on three people: point guard Reggie Jackson, center Andre Drummond and head coach/president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy.

There's reason to believe that might work out better than Detroit's low ranking here suggests. The Pistons went 7-4 in 11 games last spring without now-departed Greg Monroe, with Jackson averaging 20.9 points and 10.8 assists and Drummond 16.9 points and 14.8 rebounds during that span.

Still, we're skeptical that Detroit's talent is any better than average, and a new contract for Drummond (eligible for an extension this fall or a restricted free agent next summer) will cut into the Pistons' cap space in 2016. So to reach the next level, Detroit is counting on internal growth under Van Gundy, including rapid development for 2015 lottery pick Stanley Johnson.

So what three teams are we better then?

Philly, Minnesota, phoenix?

Good grief that ranking is embarrassingly low. I would love to see thier reasoning behind this in depth because saying "average talent" is not a reason the Pistons are third worst team in the nba

They're not even saying we're the 3rd worst team in the league, rather future rankings, which makes this even more ridiculous.
From the article, "Consider this a convenient way to see the direction in which your favorite team is headed."

I mean say what you will about our projections this year (ESPN isn't too high on us), but 3 years from now?

Here's a shot of how they ranked Golden State, #1, to give an idea of the factors. I can't see the Pistons because I happily cancelled my insider subscription a couple months ago.

We'll then ESPN really isn't a sports news outfit anymore but rather a sports entertainment product just as the nfl, or nba is.

Sad really. A cursory look over our roster, and coaching staff would, and does make this summation moot. Putting it out there for people who pay for it is close to fraud.

This article is garbage and ESPN is putting more and more of it out. Understand saying they're not sure how the talent will mesh and guys need to improve internally but........give me a break. Typical Detroit hate.

i dont buy much into these and im not even sold on our future going forward. sure i think we're going to be better, but i still dont see a championship caliber team. that doesnt change the fact that this article and espn is complete and udder garbage

I'm of the opinion that all list/rankings online, be it ESPN, buzzfeed, or something else, are written solely for the purpose of generating clicks and comments, and thus should never be taken seriously. It's not about being right, it's about drawing in viewers. So if they underrate us, it's because they want us to complain in the comments. If they overrate us, it's so that other people will complain in the comments :lol:

ESPN are pretty awful at predicting breakout teams, which is fair, nobody really can with any consistency.

These rankings mean nothing to me. These pundits aren't out there playing in Pistons jerseys.

Jackson-Pope-Johnson-Drummond is pretty good. The nucleus for an annual playoff team. Pope and Johnson sound like winning players, Jackson complements Drummond, and of course AD himself being the elite piece. Huge upside. If those 4 grow together you're looking at a team who's a threat to make the ECF year after year, assuming you surround them with the proper role players/depth.

Even as someone that frequently tries to play the devil's advocate towards homerific opinions/speculation on here, this is just ridiculous. ESPN has really gone downhill over the years.
