mojo13 wrote:The other wild card is there could be some solid teams from the hosting nations (ie Turkey, Russia etc). However they say priority will be given to the qualifier teams to host (which would then drag the next highest finishing team from their zone in - for example, if Canada hosts, then DR gets in, if France hosts then Latvia gets in.). Hopefully yhe qualified teams host so we avoid bringing Russia, Turkey, Germany etc into the competition.

Also hoping FIBA does something dumb and dumps the Asia/America/Oceania/African teams mostly into one pool and we avoid the big three (France/Serbia/Greece). I still think we can beat (and likely be favored against) any other team than those three.

Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I think the fact that they didn't play games to decide 9th place might mean they will have max one host from Europe. I think there is a decent probability that that one team is one of the 5 qualified or Finland. Either way, we get Latvia or Finland, and avoid Turkey, Slovenia, Croatia, or another really tough team.

That being said, I am not sure how much separation there is among the top Euro teams and Latvia and Finland. The whole tournament seemed pretty competitive. E.g., Spain lost to Italy and only beat Germany by 1 (I believe that if they had lost that game, which was their last of the round robin, they wouldn't have made the playoffs).

Re the allocation of the 18 teams, I really don't know what to expect.

Re format of tournament, I have not seen anything re whether it will be full round robin with no playoffs, full round robin with a final, or some other format.

Re the timing of the tournaments, FIBA website still says July 5-10, and Toronto Star and other sites have reported July 5-11, but Grange reported that timing has yet to be determined. I think August is better than July for us, as more time for Bennett, Nicholson, and Thompson to sign contracts, and avoids summer league conflicts for Lyles, Murray, and perhaps Hanlan.

Its not going to be August - the Rio Games start August 5th.
It will be in the time frame suggested - early July.

I think you are right on the hosting continents - My guess is only one tournament in Europe.

I see Americas, Europe and Asia each hosting.

Interesting notes in from the 2012 last shot qualifier.
1) held in Venezuela - chosen over other bids of Angola, Macedonia and Lithuania (corrupt petro dollars speak!)
2) pools decided by drawing the 12 teams into 3 pots based on their zone. Europe in Pot 1, Americas/Oceania in Pot 2, Asia/Africa in Pot 3.
3) 1 team from each Pot into 4 pools of three - then round robin, then top two from each pool (8 teams total) went into a single elimination tournament.
4) the three Euro teams looked dominant with Lithuania and Russia qualifying easily and Greece shockingly being upset by Nigeria in the 1/8 round (after easily beating PR and Jordan in pool play)

If they do something similar they may be looking to spread the teams out by geography - doesn't quite work out as smoothly as it would put only two Europe teams into one tournament.

In expanding from 12 to 18 teams they have awarded 1 slot to Asia, Africa and Europe. Nothing to Americas. Plus the three hosting slots.

I didn't realize Olympics were early August. Yes, that does suggest early July for qualifier, or mid July at latest. In 2008 and 2012 they had 20 days between end of qualifier and start of Olympics.

Yes, I think they will be inclined to spread the teams out geographically, meaning two European teams per tourney. Maybe we get lucky and avoid Serbia and France (not that Greece or Italy won't be tough draws).

In both the 08 and 12 qualifiers they had groups of 3, with round robins within each group (2 games each), and then playoffs. If they stick with that format, it could mean round robin games on days 1 and 2,cross-over semi final on day 4, and then finals on day 6. That fits with the July 5-10 schedule.

RJ transferring to Montverde Academy.

They've been stocking up on Canadian talent lately. Simi, Carr and Washington are already there.

Any Canadian prospects that I should be on the look-out for this year?

Jamal Murray and Dillon Brooks obviously but who else?

Kyle Wiltjer
Montague Tiki Caesar
Dyshawne Pierre

Speaking of Dyshawne Pierre did anyone else read that he was suspended for a semester for a sexual assault case? Probably why he had to leave training camp for Pan Am early.

How can you forget XRM? FSU has a deadly scoring backcourt with the addition of Dwayne Bacon and I really think they can challenge UK for having one of the best guard play in the country.

I'd also throw Naz Long on the list of Canadian players to follow. Iowa State has a lot of returning players from last year so they have a chance to make a deep run in the tourney regardless of their new head coach and even then I think Prohm is good.

Definitely Jalen Poyser on UNLV.

I'm hoping for a nice year from Chris Egi at Harvard.

Teki is a sitting ou the year as a transfer. So you won't be watching him.
I think Dyshawn is done at Dayton as well. Small chance he is back in December.

If we are just talking NBA prospects then I think only the following have a shot at the NBA in 2016 (in order):
Jamal Murray
Kyle Wiltjer
XRM
Dillon Brooks

With only Murray as a sure fire draft pick.

Anyone else isn't on the draft radar this year. Someone can always surprise though. and yes there are dozens and dozens of other guys who will be very important to their teams. Proyser, Long, Egi and many more.

I heard that it's just round robin and then the number 1 seeds from each of the 3 groups go to the Olympics.

They are not NBA prospects, but Mychal Mulder (Kentucky), Ray Kasongo (Tennessee) and Marial Shayok (Virginia) are somewhat promising.

From what I've read it’s likely going to take an outlay of between $3 million and $5 million to host the event July 5-11, 2016, depending on the location officials decide on. I'm sure a city as rich as Toronto can find investors i.e governments or mlse.

Been hearing Fran Fraschilla hyping up Harvard. I think they have a solid squad as well. I'm not sure if he'll get playing time, but I'm looking forward to Cory Johnson more so than Egi. First saw him at the BioSteel All Canadian game and he was lighting it up. Dude is a sharpshooter. Can't believe you guys are sleeping on him here. Don't think Poyser is that great.

I like Cory Johnson as well. He reminds me of a Bradley Beal.

I think Poyser's game is more suited to college than the NBA. He needs the ball in his hands, which he won't get in the NBA. And he's not a good enough shooter to be a serious threat off the ball. But best case, I can see him having an Austin Rivers like career in the NCAA.

Breaking News:

Patman willing to play for free for Team Canada.... quite the bargain! Team Canada has not yet agreed to the deal.

That's fine these are the guys I want to hear about. Based on the new qualification system we're probably going to be seeing a lot of guys on our national team who were not quite good enough for the NBA but made it overseas in some way.

Cory Johnson is another dude I forgot about! I remember thinking he was pretty good when I caught a couple of the under 19 games this summer.

Anyone know if he can do anything other than get open and shoot really well? When I watched him this summer I was always impressed at how well he seemed to find his spots off the ball. If he could get a couple other skills down while at Harvard I'm sure he could get some looks in the NBA.

Further to the NCAA players to watch posts from last week, how about foreign league players to watch?

Here are some I will be following (I suspect players from this list will form the core of our team for the 2017-2019 qualifying tournaments):

Pangos (Spain)
Hanlan (Lithuania)
Scrubb (Greece)
Heslip (Italy)
Mullings (Germany)
Rautins (Turkey)

K. Joseph (France)
Shepherd (Italy)
Doornekamp (Germany)
Walker (Italy)
Birch (Turkey)
Kendall (Spain, I think)

Anyone know where Bachynski is playing this season?

Bachynski got a training camp invite with the Pistons.
