Morris sees versatility around him, too, after scrimmaging with his new teammates over the past two weeks. He sees himself primarily as a small forward, but he says he can guard pretty much every position but center. Stanley Johnson, he said, has caught his eye and thinks they’ll be able to play together whenever Van Gundy calls on them to do so.

“We’re big together, playing at the same time. I also love him at the two. That’s an advantage to have a big three and a big two,” he said. “I think it’s going to be real interesting to see how Coach mixes us in there together. I think he’s going to be a big thing in the league. I’m excited to see how good he’s going to become.”

He’s also supremely interested in seeing how good he can become, given the most certain role he’s had during his time in the NBA. And if he reminds Pistons fans of anyone in his carriage – another certain Philadelphian, perhaps – it won’t entirely be by accident. Morris knows the public image of Wallace doesn’t have much to do with the Wallace he’s come to know, who does so much good work but always deliberately out of the spotlight.

“That’s what made his career what it was: ‘Don’t take my kindness for weakness. When I step between those lines, I’m going to be a (colorful expletive). When we get off the court, I’m back to normal. I’m a regular human being,’ ” Morris said. “That’s what made him the player he was.”

Keith Langlois: Almost all of your players have been in town for the last three weeks working out. Based on how their bodies look and what you can tell about their skills development, are you pleased with the body of work they’ve put in over the summer?

Stan Van Gundy: Yeah, I am. I think the guys clearly put in time. They’ve come back in pretty good shape. There’s nobody overweight – except me. Guys have worked hard on their skills. Guys have lifted. They’ve done their work.

SVG: We hired a sports psychologist, Tom Perrin, as a consultant. He’s not going to be with us full time, but he’ll be here a lot. Players and staff will be able to be in contact with him full time. He spent a week getting to know the staff, meeting with all the players. It’s a good addition for us to have that available and give those guys that kind of support. The early feedback from our players has been really good. We’ve had several guys who have said they really think Tom can help them.

KL: What’s his background?

SVG: For a long, long time in the NBA as a head coach, I’ve thought about adding the position. I’ve just never been real comfortable being able to pull the trigger. The thing I like about Tom is he’s not only got a great background in sports psychology, he’s also got a basketball background. He played Division I basketball at the University of Vermont. He coached for a long time at the University of Vermont and then at the University of Virginia with Terry Holland for a long, long time back when they had the really good teams – Ralph Sampson and those guys. He’s been an advance scout in the NBA for Rick Carlisle. While he was at Virginia, he got his PhD there under Bob Rotella, who is one of the leading lights in sports psychology in this country. Worked for a long time with the United States men’s national soccer team, the World Cup team. So he’s got a great background working as a sports psychologist with high-level athletes. He’s got a great background in basketball. He’s just a really good fit and, again, the feedback early on has been great from the guys.

KL: So you’re not in a position of having to make your case for these positions?

SVG: Tom’s clearly a great businessman and he’s looked at it and said, OK, look where the cap’s going. Right now, it’s a little under 70 (million dollars a team) and it’s going to jump a great deal. You’re going to spend all that money on your greatest resource – your players – you don’t want to shortcut in other areas. You want to assemble a scouting staff in terms of quantity and quality that can cover what you need to get covered to make good selections. You’ve got to get the staff to work with those people and maximize them. So I think that’s where Tom’s incredible business background really pays off, too. It’s a little bit what they do (at Platinum Equity) with companies. They purchase a company and then they go out and figure out how to make it run better. A lot of people in his business just do the mergers and acquisitions. They do mergers, acquisitions and operations. That’s what sets them apart. So they have a real understanding for the value of operating better. And I think he’s impressed that upon us. We’re headed in that direction where we’ve got pretty much all of our bases covered.

KL: What does it say about the Pistons that a guy with the type of business success he’s had would leave it behind to come to this organization specifically?

SVG: The fact a guy like him, with quite possibly the best agency out there – certainly one of the top agencies out there – would leave that and come with us, I think it speaks volumes about how people look at the Pistons and where they’re headed and, quite honestly, if you talk to Arn, it’s Tom. It’s the support, it’s the leadership, it’s all of that you know is there. It’s the same thing that for me made my decision was Tom. When you talk to Arn, it’s the same thing. I think there’s a great belief that with Tom leading things, things are going to be done the right way and you’re going to have a great chance to succeed. So you want to be a part of that.

Lol gotta love offseason articles like these... People will find any little detail to try and hype up a team or player but when the regular season starts 99% of stuff like this goes out the window. I expect Jackson to be a slightly better 3 point shooter due to being in SVG's system and simply working on his shot but I'm not expecting anything grand. I just hope he gets up to 33%, which would be a large increase in and of itself. The most exciting stuff in that article was the stuff we already know, that Jackson and Drummond are going to be a viscous P&R combination. If Jackson improves his 3 point shot then great but that's not why I'm chomping at the bit to get this season started.

Yup. While I agree that we have the versatility to play Morris at the 3 and Johnson at the 2, which could be very good defensively depending on Morris' defensive ability, it's clear Morris is just trying to protect his job. I could see SVG declaring Morris the starting SF backfiring after Johnson inevitably takes his job. We all know Johnson would be able to handle being demoted to the bench, especially since he's just a rookie, but I'm not sure Morris will respond so kindly especially after SVG called him the starting SF. Morris is definitely a wild card for us due to his attitude. Hopefully it doesn't bite us in the rear.

This probably isn't the right thread, but I'll say it anyway, Gores is such a good owner.
He made mistake when he first cam in, but he's done so much from bringing in great people like SVG and spending money on the team and stadium.
All these positive good vibes we're getting really stem from what Gores has been doing for the team.

I know KL usually posts fluff pieces, so everything's gonna sound good, but man I like what I'm hearing from SVG.
