Pistons Would Have $12.8M In Extra Space By Waiting On New Drummond Deal
Andre Drummond's cap hold of $8.2 million for the 2016 offseason may mean he doesn't get an extension with the Detroit Pistons before the Oct. 31st deadline.
The Pistons would like to keep Drummond long-term, but signing him to an extension now would compromise their cap space for next summer.
"Everybody comes to a point in time in their career when they are going to deal with contract situations, and it's better that I keep it as a personal thing and just focus on what I can control right now, which is making my team better," Drummond said.
Drummond will make about $21 million in 16-17 regardless whether he signs now or in July 2016, except if he signs the extension now, that entire amount applies to the Pistons' cap when free agency opens next summer.
The San Antonio Spurs waited to extend Kawhi Leonard and they were able to sign LaMarcus Aldridge and re-sign Danny Green with that flexibility.

IDK, I'm just scared of having a bad season or something stupid and him wanting out. Best to maybe just get it done now.

I think there is enough trust for Drummond to believe that Detroit will max him in 16'. Any non-max this year is merely a demonstrated effort to put the most talented team on the floor around HIM next season. Drummond's money is going to come.
If Drummond is motivated by winning, he is in he right place. The Owner, staff, and personnel are in place, and the culture is established. Detroit is on the rise, and it's all built around Andre. It's his team.

Not only is it only about 7-8 mill in the old market, but that money doesn't go as far in Detroit.
We're basically sacrificing security with Drummond in the hopes of acquiring an MLE or slightly above MLE level player.
This article doesn't directly state that that's whats happening here, so I'm still SLIGHTLY optimistic that something might happen soon.

Lock him up. Not only is it security, but it's actually future cap management. We're eventually going to re-up KCP and then Stan, so adding another $12 mil isn't necessarily in our best interest. Look 2-3 years down the line, not just 12 months.

Pretty sure that's inaccurate, Snakebites. This 12.8 million in extra space certainly won't land a quality player BY ITSELF in the current market, but we aren't capped out next year, are we? Definitely not, as the cap is going up 20 million, we have a few expiring deals (primarily Jennings and his 8 million), and we aren't significantly over the cap right now.
Thus, this is moving our cap space from 20-ish million (accounting for raises) to 33 million, which COULD make a difference if we prove to be a quality on-the-rise team this season that a high quality player would want to join. I'm not saying it will, but it could.
This all depends on what Andre's comfortable with. If he's sure he wants to sign here, he's the one taking the risk by delaying for a year. A career-ending injury and he's screwing himself. He knows that. I have confidence that our now competent management team has talked to him about this, and if we aren't signing him now, it means one of two things:
1) Andre wants to be here and wants to (potentially) help the team next summer
2) Andre isn't sure he wants to be here
I've seen no indication of the second scenario, but no real confirmation of the first one, either.

I disagree to the absolute maximum possible. If we are as good as I think we are going to be, that will be a huge draw alongside of this being a major market, we could land alot of players.Snakebites wrote:Not only is it only about 7-8 mill in the old market, but that money doesn't go as far in Detroit.

I'm torn on this, but if we have a great season this is a gamble that could pay off huge for us. Im down with a gamble as detroit will have a ton of space available.

I think SVG will sign him to a max like how Davis was signed. I don't care for the cap space. Get it done!!

Re: Pistons Would Have $12.8M In Extra Space By Waiting On New Drummond Deal
Okay, fine, EXTRA money.
I still think there's more than sufficient reason to be skeptical of cap space. We've had cap space 2 years in a row, and despite my low expectations I was still disappointed both times. Our running total in TWO offseasons of major cap space is:
1) Overpaid backup shooting guard
2) Point guard backup who's since been traded
3) Backup center, solid, but overpaid
4) 2 backup caliber forwards via trades. Decent backup caliber, but still not guys who are starters on strong teams.
Cap space is a useful tool, but we haven't been able to leverage our plentiful cap space over the last couple years into anything valuable enough to us to warrant this kind of risk, even though we actually had MAX cap space this offseason.
Who's the target? Who is worth the risk that we might actually be able to convince to come here? Keep in mind the best case scenario is probably about .500, and one .500 year isn't enough to make us a free agent draw. Keep in mind that the cap is going up for EVERYONE. We'll be competing with most of the league for players, a tall to downright impossible order even if the team improves as much as realistically possible.
And what about the worst case scenario? Well, lets see....
I'll grant that I'm not in the organization, maybe the certainty of his signing next season looks more certain than it seems, but not extending him seems to me like a massive risk. If we fall flat this season and Drummond isn't locked up....well, I hope you're used to the lottery because we'd be staying there for a LONG time. But hey, we'd have a TON of cap space then!

A couple months ago I put out this poll. 81% favored extending him now. What's changed since then? One article hinting that might not be what we do?
In other words, nothing. Cap space for us has been deflating at best and disastrous at worse (we're still paying the piper for the two times Dumars was trusted with cap space, and while SVG hasn't been irresponsible with it he will certainly be the first to admit that it doesn't appear to be the way to build here).

If AD wants the extension now, do it. It makes no sense to alienate him.

Re: Pistons Would Have $12.8M In Extra Space By Waiting On New Drummond Deal
This article reeks of SVG trying to justify why he wasn't able to get Drummond to sign an extension
I dont trust any professional athlete to stay in Detroit esp when he can get paid anywhere else and have a much bigger market for advertisements and endorsements
When Anthony Davis signed and Drummond didnt I knew that was trouble, Davis is a MUCH better and complete player than Drummond, yet he signed before the cap went up. That should have been our cue to give Andre his big extension. We could have used Davis signing as a way of saying "hey look at AD he signed now it's your turn"
This move will bite us in the asss because no one good will sign with us anyways so why would we risk our franchise player walking away to sign a bench player?

If this off season was any indication, I don't think we will make any big splashes in FA. improvement will have to come through trades and player development. Just extend him now and lock him up long term. Overpay or not, it's becoming the norm these days with scrubs like Tristan Thompson asking for superstar money and solid starters like Barnes wanting a good 5 mil+ yearly more than they are worth, even with the cap increasing.

Cap space isn't as valuable to us as it is to say...Miami.
We should lock AD up and use whatever space we will have to continue to bring in role players that fit.
I disagree Meeks & Baynes are overpaid though. I disagree our cap space under SVG hasn't been utilized in an effective manner.
But not locking up AD? We gotta get that done cause he's getting the max regardless
