I have a big problem when a coach puts three major schools on probation during his watch. It happened at UCLA, where he did a great job on the court...
This is America, the land of second chances, so after UCLA he got another opportunity to coach on the collegiate level. People make mistakes, after all. So he went to Kansas and won the national championship in 1988 with Danny Manning and the Miracles. Brown got people to understand how to play as a team, performing effectively and efficiently. But along the way, he got the Jayhawks, too, placed on probation.
From there, Brown went on to have an exceptional career coaching in the pros. He is the only man to win an NBA and NCAA championship as a head coach.
Later on, he got a third chance to coach at the college level, taking over struggling SMU. He built it back up, doing a phenomenal job revitalizing the program. He created excitement there, making Mustangs basketball games a destination for fans clamoring for success.
All along, there were problems galore. According to the NCAA report, Brown lied about whether he knew of any wrongdoing between a student-athlete and a former administrative assistant...
Larry Brown is 3-for-3 in getting schools sanctioned. That should equal a ban from coaching on the collegiate level.

Vitale: It's time for Larry Brown to be banned from college coaching
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Two former Piston coaches, so I thought it would be of interest here.

Vitale has no room to talk... he set this franchise back several years... and his mouth has forced millions to turn down the volume so they had to listen to their wives instead.

There certainly needs to be more accountability for coaches. Calipari is another that has no place in college basketball. Trouble has followed him everywhere, yet he gets into the college hall of fame. It's truly sad what college athletics has evolved into.

Larry Brown knows basketball. I don't think he cares about the rest, and thus he promotes situations in which those that work under him cut corners. This wasn't a problem in the pros -- it's all about wins. He probably shouldn't be coaching in college, true, but he's about done anyway.

I'm not sure whether that's justice or not, but if it includes a ban on Vitale ever broadcasting basketball games again, I'm in.

I started going to Pistons games (mostly to see Dr J at first) back when Dick Vitale was coach.
While Vitale wasn't great, blaming him for setting back the franchise seems wrong. The Pistons weren't going anywhere before Vitale and weren't going anywhere after, not until Isiah was drafted and Daly and Trader Jack came into the picture. The "big bad" moves under Vitale were:
- trading two first round picks for an eventual HOFer (McAdoo) in his 20s. It didn't work out because McAdoo was a slacker, but it wasn't exactly a horrifying idea.
- drafting Special K over Moncrief, owing to an erection lasting for over four hours involving players from Michigan colleges. Kelser didn't look like a bad choice until his knees gave out early without advance notice in college...
- trading Eric Money for Kevin Porter who (unlike Money) could actually play PG
His biggest crime back then was being obnoxious... what a shocker.

Re: Vitale: It's time for Larry Brown to be banned from college coaching
Boston was trying to dump McAdoo because of his injury history... of course Vitale was dumb enough to bite without doing the homework... giving up two early first rounders (the net result was Parrish & McHale)... no matter how you look at it this was a complete disaster... then he tosses in ML Carr for good measure.
He was infatuated with his former UofD players John Long, Tyler & Duerod... as if there wasn't better talent available.
He was too willing to give away future draft picks for the likes of Ricky Green, Jim Brewer Ben Poquette, James McElroy & Otis Howard.
It's no surprise that he walked away after losing 21 straight games from 79-80.
Yeah, he was a disgrace to the franchise

Re: Vitale: It's time for Larry Brown to be banned from college coaching
Vitale was fired when the team was 4-8. The 21 straight games stuff happened under a guy who was more turdly than Vitale. Adubato or whatever it is, and only after McAdoo had some phantom injury involving his nutsack or groin that amounted to "wah I don't wanna play in Detroit".
McAdoo was traded to us because the Celtics owner had acquired him without consulting with Auerbach, who didn't want him because he was a headcase, not so much about injuries. And no, we didn't "toss in" ML Carr. ML Carr was an RFA who didn't want to play with the Pistons, and getting a relative "discount" on McAdoo was the deal.
The Detroit Pistons had never had back to back winning seasons. They had no trajectory until the 80s. None. They were like the Craptors. Had we gotten the pick that the Celtics turned into McHale, I doubt we'd have drafted McHale, and the other lottery picks in McHale's draft class mostly sucked rocks.

Some serious knowledge being dropped. I love it! Been a hardcore fan since my first Pistons experience in '87, but I was just a pup. Really enjoy reading the insights.
