If this team wins the world series, it will be the best Blue Jays team ever. Surpassing even the 93 team.

I don't think the '93 team did have a better lineup. They were top heavy. If you give any worth to WAA, the 1993 Jays were below average at LF, RF, 3B and C. The 2015 team has been above average at every position except for LF. Granted, Travis's awesome April helped at 2B and most of the LF results don't account for who they currently have there now in Revere. But this year's team is much more balanced.

Oh for sure. 2015 is more comparable to 1992, with Jimmy Key and David Cone in the rotation and Terminator still at the back end. It wasn't getting into any 15-14 games with the A's or Hawks. Morris was the 1992 Buehrle. Fortunately, Buehrle is not going to have an opportunity to melt down in the playoffs the way Morris did.
I saw all three teams (1992, 1993, 2015). 2015 isn't a team, it's a superteam. ESPN just picked JD for MVP and Price for the Cy Young. Oh yeah, Tulo's back, that's nice. Nice??? Tulo's a great player in his own right. Pillar got a lotta love from ESPN last night for yet another crazy catch. OK, he's not quite Devon White, but man.
I watched the first ever Jays game in the snow. I remember 85. This team, with Stroman back and pitching like a #1A, is just ridiculous - the best Jays team, hands down. It has no excuses for not winning it all.
[edit] And here's the really amazing thing. The 1992 and 1993 Jays had the highest payroll in baseball. Not so co-incidentally, the C$ was peaking then too, allowing the Jays to bring in Morris, Winfield, Ricky, Molitor, Stewart and such. But this year's Jays are doing it when the Canadian dollar is < 75 cents. That's good general managing.
I agree with this. The 92/93 series teams were terrific teams but this team has dominated in a way that those teams never did. Of course you have to win it all to really deserve the comparison, but I would say that as good as that team was you weren't genuinely surprised when they lost the way we are with this team. I mean, with Tulo back, the bottom of the order will have guys like Martin, Goins and Pillar, all of whom are not only gold-glove caliber defensively but all are also killing it at the plate in recent months in their first full seasons in the majors. This team is both ridiculously top heavy and ridiculously deep. Colabello can't even get in the lineup and he's hitting .320
There are individual similarities: Devon White and Pillar, Revere and Ricky, Tulo and Alomar, even in a modest way Cola kind of resembles Olerud, Molitor and Donaldson...hmmm there are a LOT of similarities. Just revisiting that team. Man, I forgot about Tony Fernandez. Always loved that guy. It would be a helluva series if this team and that played each other, that's for sure.

It's definitely a conversation to be had later. Let's hope we can have it. I definitely think the 92 team was stronger than 93, but 93 had THE iconic moment.

This year's lineup is easily better than 93's, we are talking a historically good offense, top 10 in wRC+ of all time in baseball (Used Jonah Keri's link here). On paper this year's team looks like it would be better, although the 93 bullpen was really good.

Curious - why aren't you comparing them to the 92 team? I think it was better than 93.

93 had Molitor and Henderson, better offensive team.

A team that hasn't won a single game in the post season yet and now we are comparing them with back to back WS winners? I'll be happy if they get passed the Rangers. Everything after that is gravy.

Was the bullpen really good? Closer was Wardo, but there was no primary set-up man was either Mike Timlim or Mark Eichorn and the LOOGY was Tony Castillo who I remember was pretty bad but Cito had this love affair with him like Gibbons has on Loup. I'm pretty sure the 93 team was all offence and a great closer (no real ACE of the staff unless you consider Dave Stewart who was like a healthy Burehle, and Hentgen and Guzman had great seasons).

Re: This team vs the 93 team?
I think this thread is going under the assumption that we look past the awesome accomplishments of the 92/93 teams and just compare by paper.
Skip, you're right, the 92 team had a much better pitching staff, especially the bullpen. looking back at baseball reference, the 93 pitching staff doesn't really look as good as i thought. Cito is much worse than Gibbons. At least Gibbons was able to move on and use Loup less and adapt.

Maybe the 2015 team will pull off a miracle and come back from 2-0 to win...then we can put this thread back up again.

Originally made this thread half based on alcohol and half based on what has went down these last two games. Was terrified going in we lacked that certain something that wins in the playoffs that that team had. Never felt so bad to be right.
Not a chance that the 93 team would be down 2-0 to this Ranger team with the first two being in our house.

Re: This team vs the 93 team?
Okay, just one more comment I want to add in this thread for now--
Yesterday I was talking about how good those 93 and 92 teams were in terms of timely hitting and pitching. And a bunch of people replied that "you can't compare us to those teams that had years of playoff experience and a foundation" and blah blah. The thing is, that was just the narrative that we laid out for the 92 and 93 teams because we now know the story. They could just as well have not won anything even with all those playoff years.
And there are so many examples of teams that just won a title without any previous history solid playoff experience before. The 2005 White Sox, or the 1997 Marlins or the 2003 Marlins. Those teams got timely hits and stops like they'd been to the playoffs years before, but as a matter of fact those teams weren't any more "experienced" that the current Jaysteam. The fact is the 2015 team just haven't showed the poise and you can't blame lack of playoff experience since so many inexperienced WS teams *have* done it before.
The MLB truly is a crapshoot. The 2015 team has been simultaneously unlucky, unpoised, and mistake prone.

Re: This team vs the 93 team?
The 5 game series might hurt us here. Game 2 calls were how we lost that game. In terms of experience, it did look like our big guys were swinging for the fences until last night. Hopefully they're willing to take it slow now and just beat the inferior team. But losing Cecil does bring us back to the pack.
