Has Skiles turned a page or is this a trap?

Post#1 » by tooler » Wed Oct 14, 2015 3:45 am

Skiles looks so chill sitting on the bench with his glasses.

He's trying to institute a modern pass-heavy offense designed to find high-efficiency shots.

It doesn't seem like he gets very frustrated. In interviews he shrugs off the learning process with simple statements of reality. I feel like he's saying to the young guys: "Here's my coaching that will help you win. You can take it or leave it." Every time the reporters ask him what it feels like to be back to coaching, he shrugs that off too. "I have plenty of hobbies."

But it's preseason of year one. Has he done this before? Midway through the season is he going to turn into that nightmare coach that veterans hate?

After seeing him in The Shield, I expect him to explode soon.

There is typically a honeymoon period for most coaches, but the problem is he eventually feels pressure from various factors that wears on his patience. He's always been frustrated by noncompliant players, players who are selfish, players who don't exhaust their potential, and stress from upper management. He doesn't have to worry about any of that with this team. The players are young and lack clout and for the most part are following his plan. You'd hope that with his experience that he's learned to accept patience with a young team that won 25 games.

However, I have been surprised by how much he's letting his assistants run the show. There has been a lot of experimentation in the preseason, but I feel like it can be overkill for a team that still has to develop winning habits. I'd rather start seeing some consistency in the rotation and some more accountability and coaching on the sideline than simply yanking guys for missed assignments.
