Should the Packers trade for Vernon Davis?
I saw this article today:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/evanmassey/2015/10/14/green-bay-packers-should-try-to-acquire-49ers-te-vernon-davis/2/
At first I was intrigued that the 49ers want to get rid of him without needing too much. And it seems to be a fit for our needs of a stretch the field TE who's a matchup problem. And it makes sense the 49ers want to dump him as he's 31 years old, in the last year of his contract, might as well get something out of him. It could be the Andre Rison move to get a dynamic player in a one year rental situation.
But then I realized we played the 49ers and he was completely INVISIBLE the entire game. I don't even remember him catching a pass or even being a target. I don't remember him at all. Did he even play!? I looked at his stats and he hasn't caught a ball in 3 games, almost a month!? Is he injured?
Has he lost all his speed? Is he going through the motions and not getting open?
Or is the offense such a fail and Kapeardick so hopeless that Vernon has no shot at getting the ball?
I don't want to bother with a has been TE who can no longer get open. But if he still has his play making ability I wouldn't mind a look. I'd just want a closer inspection to see why he hasn't caught a ball in a month. Meaning is he still getting open but his QB is just that bad.

Re: Should the Packers trade for Vernon Davis?
Short answer..... No
Long answer...... Hell no. R. Rodgers is a better player at this point for a fraction of the cost and you don't have to burn an additional pick to aquire him

Why hasn't he caught a pass in forever? I know his qb sucks but not 1 pass!?

Re: Should the Packers trade for Vernon Davis?
I'm not sold on RR being all that great. I don't want to trade for Davis but I'd definitely take a TE high in the draft if one is available

Part of the reason the Packers aren't able to stretch defenses is their tight end. Richard Rodgers (58 of 62 snaps, including 16 in a three-point stance) led the team in receptions (six) and targets (eight) largely because the Rams paid him little heed. If the Packers want him with the ball in the flats or on check-downs, the Rams weren't concerned. Rodgers never breaks a tackle. He's 270 pounds, but little bitty defensive backs just chop him down with no problem. When he ran a slant from out wide on third and 3, SS T.J. McDonald stopped him from reaching the marker. On a 10-yard screen pass, Rodgers couldn't get CB Janoris Jenkins blocked and the gain was wiped out on his illegal-block penalty. Rodgers' exceptional hands failed him on a dropped 30-yard TD pass. His blocking was uneven, too. Rodgers had to play too much (94%) because rookie Kennard Backman (three) must not be ready.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Agree that we need a talent upgrade at TE, but Vernon Davis is not the answer. The guy is done.

If one argues that Quarless is better than Davis at this point, then we get our guy back in 5-6 weeks or whatever it is.

This is from 2013.

He didn't play vs. the Packers this season.
if we can get him for a late round pick, I'd do it. You have to factor in who's throwing him the ball.
This is a case of buying low.

Yeah, that's why he was

The answers you can find with a 15 second google search.

But to answer OP's primary question - eh, why the hell not? If he has the drive and is healthy, and can be had for a nominal pick, he could be a Keith Jackson-like acquisition. He's a UFA next year, so no cap hit going into 2016, and we have the room in 2015 to absorb the rest of his contract.

Re: Should the Packers trade for Vernon Davis?
Rodgers is a possession and goal line tight end. We need one who fits those, but can also stretch the field. I agree, I would go draft a TE in the top 2 rounds next year

Much rather use that cap space to either roll over into the off season or use on extensions for Daniels, Raji and Jones.

I do like the Keith Jackson reference.

No. His attitude sucks about as bad as his ability to play football.
I hate being bi-polar. It's awesome.

I have no interest in Davis, but Colin Kaepernick is the worst thing that ever happened to him.

Yup.
I wouldn't be overly interested in him, as I'm guessing he wouldn't come as cheap as some are guessing, but I am far from sold on Richard Rodgers. I absolutely think we need to upgrade, and sooner rather than later.

I would trade them a 6th rounder.

Exactly! Why not take the risk? Ted can get another 6th by trading down in the 5th if he wants.

Well there's all the lost rolled over cap space in addition to the risk of adding a guy that has been known to be a bit of a malcontent into the locker room

Re: Should the Packers trade for Vernon Davis?
Rolled over cap space is not something to ignore especially this year. I'm assuming before the season stars we were also not expecting to pay Raji and Jones. Not to mention Daniels
