If they waive him, that's salary that is stuck on the books for good, I believe. With a lot of injuries, may get tough to bring guys in and still stay under the tax. Rough estimate but they look like they only have $500k of wiggle room and not much asset-base to ship out bad salary.

Have been harping on this for years. BKN’s 2016 first owned by Boston may be most valuable chip there is.

New piece for the @sportingnews / @sn_nba about an underappreciated topic: the intense value of 2016 1st round picks http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2015-10-15/salary-cap-rookie-contract-structure-first-round-pick-2016-nba-draft

http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2015-10-15/salary-cap-rookie-contract-structure-first-round-pick-2016-nba-draft

While the value of rookie contracts has become common knowledge in the league, the 2016 NBA Draft will take this to another level. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement does not tie the rookie scale (or many other exceptions such as the mid-level and the bi-annual) to the salary cap, so they will stay at their specified level through the massive cap increases fueled by the national TV deal. The 2016 draft class will have artificially low wages until 2020, when the league’s economic structure could look totally different...

...Either way, teams will be getting unprecedented value from their 2016 first round selections in the years that follow...

...teams with 2016 first round picks will have the potential to secure incredibly low-cost players who can provide a bargain foundation for another four seasons. Teams like the 76ers and Celtics have the chance to bank a ton of cap space for other players by hitting on multiple picks next June.

My big fear is that some players decide to skip the 2016 draft in the hopes that the 2017 CBA (if and when it gets signed) somehow raises the rookie salary scale. Doubtful that a player would risk staying in school and getting a career-ending injury though. Better to be underpaid than not paid at all.

I believe no Parsons or Matthews yet either. Not looking like a strong start so far, pretty sure they are also winless in the preseason.

Any one who missed the Nets-Sixers game (I know, must viewing) missed a doozy. Those Sixers just refuse to be outtanked, even in preseason. In his own wildest dreams, did Hollis Thompson think he'd be the go-to guy down the stretch for an actual NBA team? He was even a roleplayer in college and the D-League.

One thing Brooklyn and Dallas have in common: Injury prone (or recently injured) starters with no depth behind them.

If either of these teams gets hit with the injury bug it could get real bad real fast. To be honest, things are already bad for the Nets. If Bropez goes down they're done.

Yeah obvious caveats about preseason but both teams are looking really bad. Nets' two wins are a one-pointer against Philly and some European club. Dallas is one of two win-less teams and has the second worst point differential of the preseason.

If Dallas doesn't get Parsons-Matthews back online early, they could actually be flat-out awful. With Williams out the opening day lineup could be something like Barea-Harris-Justin Anderson-Dirk-Pachulia, with like you say weak depth.

We dont want Dallas to completely suck tho right? Pick is top 7 protected so we would want them to be outside the tankers (8-12) range.

yeah. that pick is in more danger of being lost completely than the nets pick being outside of the top 5. We always dream big about the right high draft pick. lets hope 2016,17 and 18 Nets picks become the picks that the NBA collectively looks back on as the biggest heist in Sports history, even being compared to different sports lopsided trades, like the Cowboys trading Hershel Walker to the Vikings and trumping Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

Yeah, I've decided I want them to confuse the hell out of themselves. Beat the Spurs, lose to the Sixers, create confusion.

It's true that we don't want them to completely suck, but even when we tanked 2 years ago we still ended up with the 6th pick. There are some really bad teams out there and certainly a few that will hit the tank button.

Basketball Gods: I post this with respect.

Honestly, these picks feel different. It feels as though Lady Luck is going to shine on the C's and reward Danny Ainge for not going all Philadelphia full blow tank, tank, tank. Reward his integrity by guiding the next few years picks.

Pluses and minuses on both sides for me. If it gets pushed back it just gets farther into Dirk's aging-decline, so that offsets what they could potentially add next summer in FA. Plus FA next summer is pretty weak anyways, almost no chance they land a top tier PG that they need.

So my thought is if they really stink this year, there isn't going to be a huge bounce back the year after.

I don't expect Dallas to go from bottom 7 team to a playoff team either but more importantly is the numbers crunch we will be facing regarding available roster spots next summer. I think the pick being conveyed in 17 is better for us than getting the pick in 16.
