Yep. Jim Zorn has been let off the hook.

The Redskins were going to lose that game anyways. The Redskins were already losing 24-0 when Zorn called that play. The Pats/Colts game was decided by 7 points.

There's room on the hook for Zorn too.

The first thing I thought of when i saw the video. Couldn't remember anything as bad since the Redskins swinging gate play.
Now if only some NBA team could give away a win by throwing the ball up in the air in closing seconds a la Ruffin that'd be great also.

I've got 8 days of vacation left, use it or lose it policy here at work. I have no clue what to use it on. Tried to gauge my girl's interest in going to Portugal in December since that seems to be one of the warmer places to go in Europe but tickets got crazy expensive. Or we could do a 5 day/4 nighter in the Dominican. Decisions decisions.

Both are good choices. I love Europe but I typically go Europe in the summer and somewhere closer in the winter.

Happy that Nationals hired Dusty Baker rather than Bud Black, even if the process was a total mess. Black was nothing special.
Baker has actually won something and is cool for:
smoking a joint with Jimi Hendrix
is friends with Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, Carlos Santana
owns part of a winery
may have invented the high-five

In the end it comes down to players performing, and it doesn't hurt to have Baker who has a history of getting the most out of his team.

And 3 time manager of the year. Still, I get the impression he's always been in good situations, and the stats guys say he ruined a bunch of very promising young pitchers by over-using them.

Baker has been out of the league for a while and has no modern grasp on the game. He's another old school guy who runs pitchers into the ground and is terrible in late game tactical situations. But hey, he used to get high with Jimi Hendrix, that means we'll win a World Series for sure! :banghead:

Three years ago, he was second in manager of the year voting. He's been top first or second in manager of the year voting six times. He got raves from FP Santangelo, who played for Baker in 1999, on the radio the other day. For whatever all that's worth. :)

I like all the music connections. Maybe they'll improve the in game soundtracks.

The ruining pitchers stuff is old. He changed his ways as far back as 2008. Where did the "terrible in late game tactical situations" come from? He has lots of great recommendations. He may be old school but is very sharp. The new analytics isn't rocket science. He's been flexible in the past so should be able to incorporate new ideas.

Bud Black would have been the very definition of a mediocre hire. Never been to the playoffs, and his team finished with a winning record twice in the 8/9 seasons he managed.

But in baseball, your manager is only as good as his players. At the major league level, you're not going to teach your players much - except for pitchers - and that's more up to the pitching coaches than managers. It's probably more about getting players confident and how well you get along with the media. Strategies matter, but that's more for people to talk about on sports radio than anything else. Basically, everyone copies what appears to be successful. Maybe the top couple of managers - like Buck Showalter - really make a difference and can get a .500 record out of a talent-starved roster (this year's O's had terrible starting pitching).

Well truth be told, the Padres have always had the lowest payroll in baseball, or one of the lowest. The one year they did go all in, Black got fired. Baker knows how to deal with personalities, he managed Bonds, Jeff Kent,, Sosa, etc. Baker will be fine.
