You'd be right about him if he was left with nothing. But clearly he knew that he'd get paid regardless so he played this close to perfectly. All he did was fight for what he knew he was worth and I can't hate anyone for doing that - and getting the money.

Tristan Thompson is a great role player but he only does two things. Grab rebounds and get hustle points. He's basically Ed Davis with a better motor.

This deal will essentially give TT most of the savings that the Cavs will get on the deals of Love and Irving, since each of them will be 5-7m below market value by the 3rd year of the deal. This contract won't cripple them, but it will cost them an opportunity at slotting another valuable roleplayer or two into that surplus cap space. Great for the rest of the league, really.

Does that make Ed Davis a Top 5 PF? I'm absolutely convinced that Ed Davis > TT, and Ed just signed for 3/20 this offseason.

I get he's Lebron's buddy and all, but I can't believe a bunch of playoff games last year escalated hi value so much.

As a neutral fan, I'm glad for the drama to be over, but disappointed TT got so much money for being a d**k.

Ok, all these figures are from Spotrac or wiki...I'm not a cap expert.

The Cavs are currently $24,414,569 over the 2015 NBA Luxury Tax Threshold of $84,700,000.

Wiki say that are taxed at a $4.75 rate per dollar over the tax due to being repeaters and being more than $20mil over the limit.

That puts the tax at $115,969,202.75. Crazy if that is correct. I'm reading those figures and reporting what I read. If someone has more accurate info, please share. These are the best I could find.

Its a huge overpay, but its pretty clear what happened here.

Cavs won, made their point they weren't going to pay him max. but there was still the Lebron connection, and a title still to win. So after letting him run out of all options, then come back to their original offer, and throw on an extra $2mil as a face saving gesture for Paul, since they will have to deal him and his cronies for years to come.

It's an overpay, but if Dan Gilbert is willing to cough up that crazy luxury tax money, then good for the Cavs. TT is still a quality player and he's nice to have for a team competing for a title right now. It's not like they'd have had much flexibility even if they let him walk.

I wonder how crazy Cleveland's tax bill is going to get in future years once the repeater penalty kicks in.
