Drummond Low Free Throw Attempt Issue

Post#1 » by pistontr » Thu Oct 22, 2015 2:45 pm

last 5 games Drummond used 14.2 field goals per game but only 3.4 free throws. last season it was 4.5 per game. he is bad free throw shooter, so why is that?
Sorry for my poor english

It's preseason, not sure they care about sending him to the line right now.

Far too small a sample size to make any meaningful assumptions. But in general I think his poor shooting at the line makes him more tentative about getting there than if he were a consistent 70%~ or so from the line.

Why do you want the worst % FT shooter in the league getting more FTs?

I don't understand.

Simple logic. It is pre-season. Thus, Drummond is not throwing his body around as aggressively as regular season. Thus, less Free Throw attempts.

As far as making those Free Throws, it is most likely all mental. I recall Dwight would make 80% in practice and 50% in games. Thus, probably a similar situation.

I understand where you are coming from, but.....He's gonna get hammered under the hoop a lot IMO. Why not foul a 38% FT shooter, only makes sense to me.

The obvious answer is that teams aren't fouling him intentionally in the pre-season. Expect it to begin Tuesday.

Yup. Pretty much. All you need to do is foul him one more time than preseason average and I can imagine he'll get fouled at least 2 more times than that. He just needs to make half of them because fouls are also useful because it puts teams in foul trouble. Foul trouble is good because it puts pressure on the defense to foul less and usually you make mistakes by leaving guys open. Tough part is taking him out before they foul him but usually that's easy to do. Next trouble is confidence and whining from Drummond. He's still a little kid. I can see him growing up more this year just like last year. You'll see a difference. He'll find his roar.

Don't worry about Drummond at the line. I expect I vastly improved % from him this year.

i know it was only on 21 attempts but his preseason wasn't too encouraging in the free throw department - he shot 38%.

It's going to take some time but working with (his name escapes me for some reason) shooting guru is really going to help.

If Dre just scrapes 50% it's going to be a huge help. His form has improved for sure though. First form, then repetition, then he'll actually start making them.

Another year of drum-a-Drummond awaits, apparently.
