Cavs just signed Thompson to max deal !!! People pay to watch an old Kobe play, will they do the same to watch a healthy Thompson ? And how much are those tickets again ?

considering Thompson is more likely to play an entire season, I doubt he's overpaid compared to Kobe, at least when we consider impact on the court. Merchandise and TV ratings make for a complete different story of course.

Kobe is obviously not overpaid in terms of the money he generates for the Lakers franchise.

He obviously is overpaid if your primary interest is building a contender, due to the existence of a salary cap.

No-one should blame Kobe for taking the money. The blame should go to the Buss family for not putting the team in a position where it's worth Kobe's while to sacrifice salary (as it is in the case of Tim Duncan). Kobe shouldn't take a payout just so that the Lakers can sign 2nd tier FAs instead of 3rd and 4th tier FAs.

Here in Australia the average worker gets like 35,000 to 50,000 a year while even the 15th player on the Lakers squad gets paid like what $700,000 to barely even average 10 min a game - talk about over paid lmao.

But your average worker is exactly that -- average, while Sacre is top300 in his field. What is the average pay for top 300 engineers? Also, Sacre is an entertainer which adds more money to his wages.

I think the mistake was not waiting until he returned from his achilles injury. But from the Buss family's perspective, I don't think that even mattered. They genuinely appreciate how much Kobe has done for the franchise and they wanted to reward him. It's just sad that instead of praising a noble decision by the Buss family, the media instead chose to vilify Kobe. With the constant bickering between owners and the player's association, that decision by the Buss fam didn't get the praise it deserved.

The Lakers were going to be bad even if Kobe re-signed for free. The franchise was headed that way with or without Kobe because of Basketball Reasons. Max offers aren't enough to convince FA's to sign with a losing team made up of unproven rookies. Kobe at least sells tickets while the team stinks. That's the advantage of having a transcendent superstar. Even an old broken one.

So to the Buss's, Kobe's contract is more than worth it. It put butts in the seats, it rewarded an all-time great, and it showed the league how the Lakers treat their greats.

this is part of a study I did a few years ago, i researched the numbers over a 6 year span (was going for 10 but after 6 realized the numbers were barely changing so stopped at 6)

There are roughly 16,600 college players pounding the hardwood of the NCAA men's Basketball programs, on average 50 will be drafted into the NBA, so of the 557,000 kids in high school all across the nation that partake in the game, down to the 16k in the NCAA only 50 of them will make the big show...

Well actually that's not right, because of those 50 that are picked up in the yearly draft, less than 40 of those will ever see NBA playing time, even less will be playing in the league 2 years after they were drafted... Boiled down is that maybe 30 players in any one draft year ever see NBA playing time and last longer than 2 years..

So we see that just to be one of the active players that make up an NBA roster is a pretty good deal, just being on a team makes you a member of a fairly exclusive club...

As an outsider if you don't mind my post, I think Kobe 5-6 years ago would be underpaid. As a Laker, he is still a Revenue generator. But, if all teams had money on their caps and Kobe right now was a free agent, I doubt he would break a $20 mil offer and may be around Tristan's contract. Just because of his recent injury history and age, he just may not dominate games anymore like he used to. He would be a huge risk in signing.

I hope he proves everyone wrong and just kills it this year though. Would make for a great story.

Eh, im more curious how the situation woulda played out if the Lakers either did not offer the extension AND Kobe still got hurt right on schedule. Now if Kobe had played out the season strong, by all means pay that man his money, but if he went down after 6 games i kinda wonder how much he'd have gotten paid to be retained. I mean if he had went all crazy and STILL demanded to be the highest paid player in the league.... oh man it'd get ugly.
