Unlike most young players, Hassan is going into Free Agency where he will have to pick a team and we don't have anything outside of loyalty to offer. Hassan isn't your average player where you can just go out and find another. We need for him to improve and we need him to see that were doing is what's best for him. I fear that if we just bench him every time he makes a mistake for 12 minutes that long term, he isn't part of this team which would be a giant step back. Last time, he wasn't made when he got bench, you could see he was upset at his game. But when he was benchd for a long stretch, it quickly turned to him being up set at the situation.

Says a lot that Spo trusted him late.
Eh, its the first game. Remember last year Spo trusted Shabazz late in games at the start of the season.

kid has to either get it or he wont at some point GT. if Hassan cant navigate through the "Down" times and play through it (and when you mention young players he is young but he isnt THAT young) then maybe he isnt worth the investment. He cant sulk, pout & play for himself. Either buy in, stay engaged and poised or when he is a free agent this summer we shouldnt even make him an offer. I realize he is a freakishly rare talent so I hope like all hell he gets "it" but if he doesn't it will not be the fault of Spo or the organization. And I know your comment on benching him is directed at Spo and his ways. Spo did the right thing, Hassan needed to sit down and watch a professional approach his role the way UD did in that 1st quarter/half.
Hassan Whiteside is in line for a payday (how big is yet to be determined) but that investment needs to be accompanied by increasingly lower risk as the days pass not higher risk.
When Alonzo Mourning, who knows better than anybody about being young and letting your emotions get the best of you (and more importantly how to overcome that mental hurdle) talks to the kid and leaves the conversations like "I am not sure that kid is hearing me" that is a red flag and trust me the guy who makes the decisions & the guy who signs the checks listen to Alonzo. This is Alonzo Mourning talking to you Hassan. not your Twitter fanbase screaming GOATSIDE or Future & DJ Khaled propping you up in your music video. Stop tweeting, stop talking and BUY IN. PROVE IT.
I know its one game so all please do not mistake this post for sky is falling alarm sounds from me at all. He has plenty of time and the Heat have faith in the program. but these concerns were expressed to me all summer & to see him come out in the preseason vs Houston and pout around the court and then play like he did last night. Not a good start.
The good thing is, 81 more to go.........but this has nothing, NOTHING to do with Spo in my opinion.

McBob shares the same mentality.

Being a negative to the TEAM will hurt him. However, he is on the precipice of being a major star. He puts up video game numbers. Why not make him the go to guy?
In the end, I always favor the team over the player. Watching a cohesive team get IT is special, a la the 2004 Pistons. He will figure it out. He just needs a few games of destroying people to get his nut off.

Because that's not his game and he's not the best offensive player(scoring or passing) on the team

Wade is the only one who really makes a concerted effort to get him the ball. Team is going to have a major problem on their hands if they don't keep him involved in the offense because he will check out.
He doesn't want to just rebound and block shots, and I don't blame him.
They ran three plays for him in the first five minutes of the game...resulted in two turnovers and a missed jumpshot early in the shot clock. That's a good number of plays...I'm not sure why that would make him emotional.
And? Green missed his first 4 shots and ended up with 19 points. You don't just abandon the guy because of a few early mishaps. He played like 9 minutes in the first half, of course he was upset.

GameTime_3 wrote:I agree that most of it is on Hassan. He needs to improve the mental approach to the game. That isn't debatable but what we can do from a team stand point is understand him a bit better and instead of making things worse, by just benching him, we find a way to make him feel better. Benching him for 15 minutes isn't one of them. He is to talented and we don't have anyone behind that even makes this debate. Hassan playing like crap is still a force as we saw in the second half. Some guys like to be yelled at, some guys like to be left alone, the program needs to be able to adjust, not just force the player to fit the system. That how talent is lost and not developed. I would of benched him as well.
