That kid is special. I've said it before and I will say it again. With Matthews being out for a month he has a real chance to cement himself in the rotation in Dallas.

Yeah, I noticed that and was gonna put up a post about that as well. Through 3 PRE-SEASON games as a starting guard he's avg 21 ppg.

Also, before putting up a total stinker last night, former Hawk Jared Cunningham had a decent showing or two avg 18 ppg off the bench for CLE.

I often wonder how Bud and his staff decide which vagabond wingmen deserve the opportunity to fully benefit from their tutelage.

And which ones become expendable.

Even Glenn Robinson III is avg 12 ppg while shooting 54% from 3-pt range off the bench for Indy.

I fully acknowledge these are all just pre-season stats, but clearly these guys have the ability to put the ball in the hole.

I'd love to hear what makes THJ a drastically better option than any of these guys. (In particular JJ2)

Just watched that reel, plus one of his old highlights with ATL. That kid can score. he's like a young Kevin Martin.

Once upon a time, I envisioned JJ2 and Dennis as the starting guards on this team for the next decade.

Glad to see him doing well, resurrecting his career after a terrifying back injury. But it'll definitely hurt seeing him do it in another team's jersey knowing we could have kept him for a minor amount on his rookie option for at least another season.

We get a chance to see him in action tonight!!!

DALLAS – John Jenkins doesn’t see red when he sees the red-clad wearing Atlanta Hawks.

...when the Mavs (0-3) host the Hawks (3-0) at 7:30 tonight at American Airlines Center, Jenkins will be revved up to show his old team what they miss by not having him on their roster.

"I definitely want to do well,’’ Jenkins said after Friday morning’s shootaround. "I say that, but I love everybody over there in that locker room. The organization was great to me, so I’m going to compete as hard as I can. But I definitely want to do well.’’

Jenkins has certainly done well so far for the Mavs. He’s the team’s leading scorer with 20.3 points per game, and is also shooting a healthy 48.9 percent from the field.

This is sort of a redemption year for Jenkins.

"I got hurt my second year, which is probably the reason why I didn’t play that many games that year," Jenkins said. "But last year I feel like I could have played a lot more, but that’s in the past now. I was behind two All-Stars – Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver -- who had a helluva year. Plus, we went to the (Eastern) Conference Finals, so I can’t really be mad. We were winning and we were healthy for the most part.’’

"I just want to go out there and show everybody what I can do,’’ Jenkins said.

Unless we work for the Hawk staff and travel there we won't, lol

Don't know who the main 2 is, but Jenkins has been holding it down for the meanwhile.

So far, tonight he has 16 points on 6-9 shooting. Would it have killed them to keep him for one more year?

Wes Matthews, but he's probably a long ways away. The other competition is Harris, so Jenkins should get about 15 minimum a game and maybe 25-30 in a Jet role if he keeps this up.

I'm really impressed with how he strokes it. Like Steph Curry without the dribbling wizardry.

Dallas has a way of making undersized scoring guards work for them unlike anyone else. Think of a guy who wouldn't even be in the league like Barea or castoffs like Mayo, Monta, and even JET. Roster construction, coaching, Dirk, whatever it may be these guy's success there hasn't been indicative of their success elsewhere and even then it's far too premature to crown Jenkins as some sort of lost gem lest you fall for Jordan Crawford syndrome yet again.

Let's face facts: if John Jenkins is the Mavericks' leading scorer three games into the regular season, things probably have gone horribly awry. Jenkins never averaged more than 6.1 points in his three seasons with Atlanta and played only 37 games the last two seasons.

[C]oach Rick Carlisle said of Jenkins. "He's one of those guys who has a great stroke. And he handles the ball better than we expected."

The play of Jenkins so far has been the wild card that perhaps was not expected. The 6-4 guard played three years in Atlanta and never established himself in the Hawks' rotation.

Often, a change of scenery does wonders for a young player. He's also playing some point guard, which is something he did not do in Atlanta.

Jenkins said, "I can't express that enough. I put in the work for three years and felt I earned a chance in Atlanta. But I didn't get it.
A lot of guys just need an opportunity. I wasn't a first-round pick for nothing."
HERE

Really glad he's getting the shot. I often wonder if Ferry had still been running things last Fall, would he have at least picked up the option on JJ2 and perhaps attempt to move him for a future 2nd rounder at least.

Jared Cunningham is making the most of his opportunities as well.

With Tristan Thompson continuing his holdout, the Cavaliers have 13 guaranteed roster spots occupied.

Camp invite Jared Cunningham is the team’s leading scorer in the preseason and “by far” the favorite to claim the 14th slot at this point.
HERE

If we'd had a D-League team of our own the past few years, perhaps we could have kept them under our control a bit longer to see if their value could increase or if they might provide any benefit to the big league club.

Regardless, I'm happy to see Jared getting the opportunity. He was a promising young player in college. At age 24, he still has the chance to find a niche for himself in this league.

Couldn't agree more regarding the Hawks having a DLeague team. We can't get one soon enough.

Glad to hear both JJ and JC are showing their skills. I hope to see a lot of them going forward.

The D-League was the least of our issues. Way too many more critical pieces missed by the previous clueless ownership group.
EX: It took a new ownership group for us to finally get a legit 3rd option in the post.

After getting very little burn in the first game of the season, JJ2 got the start last night against LAC at the 2-guard position.

He put up some pretty solid stats. Shooting 50% from the field and leading the team with 17 points.

He did go 0-4 from 3-pt range and had a +/- of -24...the worst mark of any player on either team.

That kid has some talent. He just needs a team, personnel and scheme that illuminates his obvious strengths and limits his very clear weaknesses.

A little unusual, but I guess good for him to get 17 without knocking a 3 down. So I guess he's not a one trick pony.

Officially jacking this thread and making it an ex-Hawks update thread.

Couldn't help but smile when I saw this ESPN update:

Jared Cunningham gets the start tonight in place of J.R. Smith. It's his first start in 46 games over parts of four NBA seasons.

I wish we had tried harder to develop this kid into a 3 & D player here.

Super proud of him for sticking with his dream and salvaging his career.

Eh. Kid was a waste of a roster spot for where ever he played for 4 years. Good for him for sticking it out, but he still isn't good enough to be a rotation player.
