Good move by Rich Cho. Lamb has looked good in the two games he's played in, he looks comfortable on the floor.

I think he's a starting 2 guard in this league. he has a chance to be really good here. consistency is key but he has all of the tools. could look like a steal in a year, worth the risk to lock him up imo.

I'm pleased. Kemba/Lamb/MKG total just $32M a year, which is less than 40% of the cap next season, and less than 30% of the cap in following seasons. That's not bad at all

People are such morons on twitter. Acting like we gave him 15 million a year or something. 7 million is a freaking bargain for him. He has a chance to breakout and be a really good player.

Re: Lamb Extension, 3 Years, 21 Mil - Per Stein
As I said in the Lamb thread, this is a great deal. To elaborate: we're staring at a potential cap in excess of $90m. Going into 2013, we gave Hendo a pretty fair deal of $6m per year when the cap was under $60m. Basically that $6m contract would be worth over $9m today (or next year, as that's when this extension kicks in) and Lamb's $7m would be valued at $4.5m at the time Hendo signed. And Lamb is of course much better suited for today's game.
Basically a very good deal.

Cho is.... breh
you don't do this.
He jumped the gun like crazy. I understand his back is against the wall so to speak because of the extension deadline, but he's gotta stop negotiating against himself. This is even worse than the Kemba situation. Let guys get to RFA. He cannot be this paranoid about losing talent. It was one of his biggest knocks from earlier in his career and he's still doing it.
Giving a guy a 21/3 over 2 good games and a good offseason? No.
No.
wtf
And I'm not even mad at the contract. Its a hell of a better deal than paying Jodie Meeks the same amount of money. But the principle of this is just.... breh come on. Cho. You suck at business. Amazing at trades. But geez. Wtf.

Also I'd expect to hear news about our pending options anytime now. Have to decide on whether to opt in to year 4 for Zeller and year 3 for Hairston by midnight tomorrow night. Both seem like obvious decisions, though I thought PJ was on the bubble until recently.
Thought about making a "cap notes" thread for stuff like this, but there's not likely to be much news like this beyond tomorrow.

Better safe then sorry. With just about every team in the league going to have an insane amount of cap room its risky letting just about anyone you like going into RFA, especially if its a young player coming off of a solid year like Lamb more likely than not will do.

These are pretty much formalities that aren't even always announced on time. I wouldn't be freaking out if we didn't hear anything about this

If he's that good, then you match and don't even feel bad.
This is stacking the deck against yourself. The guy plays two decent games after years of essentially nothing at all and you cash out?
It doesn't matter if Lamb is good or not. That's just bad business dude. No way around it.

Exactly. The following year the cap is going to be over 100M. Even if Lamb turns out to be a complete bum and plays at a D-League level for the next four years, the contract basically has the same impact as the one we gave Matt Carroll all those years ago. There's very little risk.

It's obviously not bad business if he outperforms the contract, in which case it could potentially be a significant savings. Cho is betting Lamb's performance this season will raise his value above $7M. I bet he's right, so I'm happy with the extension.

....
i wholeheartedly disagree
this isn't about 'financial risk' vs the cap at all. its about giving out money in the most extreme way possible to avoid having to risk an overpay set by competitors that actually set the real value. its dumb. and even if it 'works out' it will always be bad business. this is the first time i've ever said to myself 'yeah, we should fire cho'
this is so against practical business that i'm more confused than i am angry.

How'd that work for Kemba? Al? The only good deal he's made has been with MKG

Not sure I like giving a career backup 21 million because of 3 threes in the 2nd of 3 games played this season
