yeah. you gotta feel terrible for nets fans. i mean it's one thing to lose out on a draft pick for a single year (unprotected pick leading to kyrie irving says hi). but 3 years in a row? then you have to factor in probably another 3 or so years to actually draft (IF you even hit on those picks). and who knows who'll be on the roster in the meantime.
i wouldn't be surprised if it were 10 years from now before the nets were competitive again, and i think that might be generous given who's leading the charge.

That's true but Nets still happen to be in a big market which counts as an advantage, and like I said, Nets will overpay for mediocre talent if they have to. That mediocre talent will probably be enough to get the Nets back in the playoffs in this weak Eastern conference.Dirkbaka wrote:DarkXaero wrote:Nets will find ways to retool in FA, even if it means overpaying for mediocre talent to become a low playoff seed team. It's hard to even imagine a team having a bleaker future. The only bright spot is that New Yorkers will still have a team if the Nets get sold.
The problem with that train of thought is that EVERYONE will have cap room the next few years and no one will want to go there. They will pick other teams who actually have a future. You will be left with the Bargs of the world again.

The East is notably getting stronger though. I wouldn't bet on the Nets getting the 8th seed any time soon.

Yes, but it actually could be the 1st, 2nd, 8th and 13th pick (from Minnesota's 2016 first round pick, top 12 protected). If they finish 12th or worse, then they get two 2nd round picks from Minny instead (but only one of those in 2016 and one in 17').
They also have another two 2nd round draft picks at least I think.
1st round: Boston, Brooklyn, Minnesota(top 12 protected), Dallas (top 7 protected).
2nd round: Philadelphia, Minnesota (via Suns, top 12 protected conveys to 2016 2nd rounder and 2017 2nd rounder), Miami, Cleveland, Dallas (Better of Dallas/Memphis second-round pick).
So if they miss out on the Minny first rounder (likely), then they'll still have....
2016
-3 first rounders (Nets, Boston, Dallas top 7 protected)
-5 second rounders
2017
-2 first round picks (Celtics+Memphis)
-4 second round picks
pick swap option with Brooklyn)
2018
-2 first round picks (Boston, Brooklyn unprotected)
lol
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

He ruined the Sixers coming off a finals run with horrible signing and dopey trades, wasted a hall of famer's career, and ruined the nets for his act 2. Oh yea, they are talking about extending him again! This guy had to have caught David Stern, Michael Jordan and Jerry West burying a body.

Big markets doesn't mean anything anymore. Look a how we and the Lakers struck out in free agency.
You will definitely overpay but I just think your overpays with be terrible since you have King as your GM.

A big market with no fandom or media coverage. The Clippers are a big market too, and people weren't exactly in a rush to go there before CP3 was traded there.

The draft will be hilarious when the Knicks and nets are giving up their picks to division rivals.

Exactly. I mean I was happy with most of the people we got. But they were 2nd or 3rd tier free agents.
But at the same time Phil found some great bargains on solid prospects who were rotten in people's benches like Oquinn/Williams.
Plus what really made the offseason good were our TWO DRAFT PICKS.
That is the problem with the Nets they will have none of that. Plus King is not good enough to pick out a Oquinn from the pile.
The nets are going to be very bad for a loong time. As a knick fan I am happy about that because well we hate them. **** the Nyets.

I was appalled at how bad the Nets were vs. the Lakers last night. Appalled. They were playing against the worst defense in the NBA and couldn't get anything going. Celtics getting a great pick. Just unbelievable that those picks are unprotected.
My RealGM account is old enough to drink.

Details on the Memphis pick via Chris Forsberg: "[Memphis pick is delivered two years after Grizzlies fulfill obligation to Denver. Pick is protected 1-13 in 2018; 1-9 in 2019; 1-7 in 2020, unprotected in 2021]"

That Memphis pick is in 2018 at the earliest and more then likely 2019, if Memphis makes the playoffs. Memphis owes Denver a pick in 2016(1-5 & 15-30 protected) and the top 5 protected in 17'. Plus you can't trade back to back picks, so unless the Memphis misses the playoffs, we won't get that pick until 2019.

there was a thread before the season started where me and this other guy were arguing with a nets fan that they were likely one of the worst in the league, I thought it was obvious considering they have bargnani now.

Well the Cavs didn't trade as many picks as the Nets did and they had to because they were desperate to try to win to keep LeBron...and none of the picks the Cavs traded turned into top 10 picks
