Why is our Offense that Bad?

Post#1 » by pistontr » Sat Nov 7, 2015 4:41 pm

I've only watched first two games and highlights. Jackson uses Drummond only to get to the flooter. Drummond barely scores in pick and roll. Ilyasova is our one of the best offensive option but we don't use him.
What is your opinion?

Offense is fine. The team is coming together. Last night was a good example of that. For periods of time our offense runs smoothly and it's dynamic, and then it gets stuck in the mud.

Alot of this comes from the youth on our team, and players becoming the players they can. Reggie is starting to figure it out and remember, the pick and roll is the absolute focal point of our offense so teams gameplan 90% of thier defenses around it. What I would like to see is more pick and roll switches with reggie or Pope setting the screen.

Given time this team will score. What's more important is that this teams defense is legit as hell. That's more important.

We have some great tests coming up in Golden state, and the clippers. If we can just be competitive in those games I'll be extatic. That means our defense was up to the test.

i think part of it has been the amount of energy we are exerting on defense. that'll certainly make it harder to hit shots, and i feel like we've missed a bunch of threes we usually make.

Ilyasova doesn't shoot the ball. When someone passes to him he just pump fakes or passes it right back.

Given the youth of this team and how new they are (so much turnover from mid-last season to now it's incredible), offensive struggles were to be expected.

It takes years for the best teams to learn to play together. Assuming this is the main core of the team 3 years from now - which it could well be, this is a team that's going to develop great chemistry. We're at the point where our core guys might well be a championship core, but that's a few years away. As far as I'm concerned, I'm loving the glide path we're on.

I think you're thinking of Tolliver.

Nah, so far from what I seen Tolliver takes the open and loosely guarded threes while Ersan just shoots the open ones. It's annoying when someone gives him the ball for in rhythm 3's he passes them up and resets the offense. He needs to be a aggressive 3pt shooter cause that's his best attribute other teams want him to pass or put the ball on the floor he is playing into their game plan not ours.

I agree 100% Erson when brought here was brought to...stretch the floor. It's makes the offense, and our predominant play, the pick&roll much much MUCH more effective.

Erson should shoot if he has a sliver of daylight. That's his damn job. Not to stand at the top of the key and be a turnstile for the ball. It does zero for the offense.

Now it's because Erson is unselfish that he does this. He hasn't quite gotten that when he keeps shooting, the next time down the floor when he goes up and drummond rolls he can chose to make the lob pass.

It'll come together and most of our offensive woes can be pinned directly on Erson as he is the pop option. Maybe utilizing Pope and Marcus more as the first option would work better.

Well that's a matter of coaching.. and Stan telling Ersan to take the shot if he has a sliver of daylight.
But instead of doing that.. we play Tolliver who isn't as good of a shooter, and his only role is to be a "turnstile for the ball"

The answer to both questions is the same; SVG likely spent the majority of training camp focusing on developing a defensive identity for the club. The offense will come around, but even when you have an off night you need to be able to hang your hat on your defense.

Offenses win regular season games, but defenses win championships. GS didn't win **** until Kerr transformed them into an elite defensive team. Teams like SA and Cleveland also have great defenses. Teams like LAC and OKC won't get over that hump until they put themselves in that same category.

We are on the right track.

Like has been said, alot of it is youth and lack of chemistry. Guys are figuring out where to be, who is going to be where and where guys are comfortable. It's a work in progress. One thing I've noticed between the game against Indiana and the game against the Suns was ball movement. When we make the extra pass, we see better shots. Shocking, I know. Guys can't get tunnel vision and throw up bad shots. We seem to press at times and force quick, poor shots to try and extend leads and keep guys from getting back on defense, but those are still poor shots and essentially turnovers. I think the game will slow down for them as the season progresses. I'm not worried about the offense overall.

We only have 1 playmaker on the floor at all times, and Reggie isn't a pass-first type lol

Just wait til Mid Season once this team gets to know each other and team chemistry is high, then come back to this thread and complain about offense.
