Hassan will be fine, just like a poster posted a few pages back, he just needs to go off one game and Bam he's back. But it's hard to do that, when he doesn't even get touches much. Riley said he should be choking spo out for lack of touches. He is our big man, and we need to encourage him. Spo is awful at that.

That's ridiculous, all players are not equal

Several times Whiteside has compounded mistakes when left in to play through it, including being ejected.

If Whiteside is playing hard and hustling, he can foul and Spo will leave him in, just like he did in the 2nd half. If he's taking frustration fouls, it's best to save him from himself and give him a chance to cool down at this point.

It doesn't matter. Wade, Bosh, at this stage in their careers are close to Hassan. Wade chucks like there's no tomorrow, and Bosh, well we know he can play soft at times (see last season before the clots), and Chalmers is a straight up IDIOT.

Wade doesn't chuck away like there's no tomorrow. Come on Heat fans lets not be spoiled. This whole calling Wade Kobe east narrative is such BS. Kobe was 8-24 in 28 minutes yesterday that is chucking away like there's no tomorrow. Wade was 7-16 not great by his standards but 16 shots is hardly a lot...

Benching of Wade and Bosh shows savvy by Spoelstra

Chris Perkins | Sheridan Hoops
January 15, 2013

What Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra did Monday night is called coaching.

Or was it overcoaching?

That’s where the debate lies with his risky and somewhat questionable maneuver.

Spoelstra benched All-Star guard Dwyane Wade for the entire fourth quarter of the Heat’s 104-97 loss at Utah. He kept All-Star forward Chris Bosh on the bench for all but the final 40 seconds, when the game was pretty much decided. And he kept starting power forward Udonis Haslem on the bench.

He essentially benched three starters for the final period.

Spoelstra lost a game, but he made a statement...

...Clearly, Spoelstra was sending a message with the benching. The message seems to be that no one – not Wade, not Bosh, not Haslem – is too big to called out, and everyone – including Wade, Bosh and Haslem – is to blame for the malaise that’s been prone to grip this team throughout the season.

Well, OK, LeBron James isn’t to blame. He played 44 minutes against the Jazz, finishing with 32 points, four rebounds, six assists, two blocks and three steals. He’s been playing with a relentless fury all season. That’s not favoritism; that’s fact.

Critics will say Spoelstra’s meddling risks fracturing the coach-player relationship on a team which – despite ranking last in the NBA in rebounds (38.6 per game) – still has the best record in the Eastern Conference at 24-12 and is tied for the fourth-best record in the league.

That’s because on the surface, benching the Wade-Bosh-Haslem trio could be interpreted as Spoelstra specifically blaming them for the Heat’s occasional lackluster play.

Wade, who was brief during postgame interviews, stuck to the facts.

“Coach makes the calls,” he said. “I’m just a player.”

Bosh, also caught off guard by not playing for most of the fourth quarter, figured he would eventually re-enter the game.

“I was ready for it,” he said, “but that call didn’t come.”

The result of Spoelstra’s decision? A sluggish Heat team trailing by 19 entering the fourth quarter used a lineup that included James, forward Rashard Lewis, guards Mario Chalmers and Ray Allen, and center Joel Anthony and became energized, cutting the deficit to two with 3:31 left before running out of gas...

The +1 feature doesn't seem to be working tonight. Put me firmly in the group that thinks Spo did a great job coaching. Anyone that watched the game would think the same. Benching Whiteside and using the small-ball lineup with Haslem is what got us going in the 2nd Quarter. Whiteside will find his groove but he can't demand the minutes. They need to be earned.

Wade threw some nice passes in this 1 & our defense got better as the game went along. Jefferson wasnt getting those points anymore..Winslow had a good game himself on both ends.

What exactly does Haslem have to do to get respect from some people around here? Is there ANYONE in our organization that has worked harder? I don't think so. Haslem defines being a team player. He's always there when we need him. I'll rue the day when he's done. :-(

What are you guys on about? Spo did an excelent job. Benching Whiteside in the first was the right move even if he wasn't sulking like a little girl. Big Al, with his face up game and plethora of low post moves, is quite possibly the worst matchup for Hassan and it showed when he got some unneccesary fouls. Bench came in at the right time to make a scoring run and the very end, after a little run of their own, CHA had no answer for Dragic/Wade/Green/Deng/Bosh small line up and the ball movement it provided.

Whiteside will play well above 30 mpg when we face the likes of Drummond, Boogie, Howard, Jordan etc. The phsysical types he can handle very well and he will learn how to contain face up players too, albeit probably not as well as lesser low post players. What I'm curious is how much does he play when our opponents go small. Will Spo happily oblige and go small himself or will he try to force the mismatch by playing Hassan? That's the real question.

I can already see that this Hassan cuddling is going to be the joke of the season and reach Michael Beasley levels after one game. So now he is close to Wade and Bosh. really? The guy who just got out of the D-League less than a year ago is close to 13 year veterans with multiple championships, all-stars, gold medal Olympians, all-NBA teams and other recognitions that they have rightfully earned throughout their careers? Did Hassan really earned that level of trust and recognition?

Look, everyone wants Whiteside to succeed and maximize his talents and potential here in Miami but you can't be helped if you can't see that he is a MAYOR work in progress still and while his potential pours out of his skin, the emotional and mental part of the game is still an issue. I agree that Whiteside needs - and will get - opportunities on the court but the Charlotte game was just not for him. He struggled out of the gate and he couldn't handle it emotionally nor mentally. Do we break his confidence and let him get kicked out of the game for doing something stupid or do we just put other qualified players on the roster to help us win the game which is the team's and other hardworking players main objective? As a coach, what kind of message you send to the rest of the roster?

Whiteside is going to get his time to shine. He still needs developing. It's a long season and I am positive he will get it but he has to earn it. A few dunks and blocks do not put you "close to" a couple of future hall of famers. Let's have some perspective please.

On to game 2...

Okay believe that if you want.

So, he posts a factual article, with verifiable facts, supporting the claim that, yes, Spo would bench Bosh and Wade, and you come back with this? Come on man, admit you were wrong, admit that Spo benching Whiteside wasn't because Spo doesn't like him (or whatever odd reason you believe that Spo is out to get him), and move on.

Look, everyone, Spo most of all (aside from Whiteside of course) wants this kid to succeed. It's in the organization's best interest, the coaching staff's best interests (which includes Spo - having a dominant center makes coaching easier), and the fan base's best interest. No one has an agenda against the kid. He just has to work hard and earn his time/touches/opportunities. End of story...

I can see both sides of the Whiteside argument but let's put everything in perspective:

Hassan was terrible in the 1st quarter on both ends and was visibly not composed. That indeed warrants a benching, no matter who it is. However, it seems little to no one recollected that Whiteside literally shut down Big Al in the 2nd half and was also a big reason why we sparked that huge run. For him to get benched AFTER THAT FACT is troubling to me. However, at the end of the day we won last night's game pretty handily with Bosh being the only impactful big.

Look, Whiteside has the physical talent and ability to be a Top 10 big in this league easily but he has to work on his mental game; how to react when things don't go his way, what and how to act when you are on the bench, body language/posture/non-verbal communication, etc. His mental approach to the game is borderline high school level where he acts like the stereotypical senior high school star but cries when a scrub had the audacity to steal/block the ball from him or a teammate decides to move the ball around the perimeter instead of feeding him 9/10 times.

He needs to undergo what a TRUE NBA schedule feels like; even he can't keep up acting like this over a course of 82 games. He will get it, he just need to experience it for himself. But as a team, we really don't need to hold his hand throughout this process. Yes, this is his contract year but the team is first above all. I have faith in him though but I also have faith in my organization to know what's good for the betterment of this team. Yes, I didn't like the fact that Whiteside was benched for eternity but this ain't the same team from last year; we don't have to swallow our tongue now. That separates us from the likes of Sac-Town. Hot-heads and immature players are not the Heat's MO; we try to change and mold that around to professionalism. If Whiteside don't like that or don't even strive to be that, then he can kick rocks.

There were times during the LeBron days when Wade (very rare occasion but it happened) was indeed benched for playing like s*** on both ends and had a s***ty attitude about it.

Bosh NEVER had issues with his attitude even when he plays like s***.

As much as we all hate Chalmers, Chalmers has the BEST response whenever he plays like s***: he doesn't pout at all and he plays like he has short-term memory. Chalmers is a s*** player so it doesn't really translate to success but imagine Whiteside having Rio's attitude.

No coach will be prompt to give you the benefit of the doubt when you play like s*** AND has a s***ty attitude through it all unless that particular player is holding the organization by the balls (i.e. LeBron, Cousins, Kobe, etc).

It may be in Spo's interest, but I don't trust his judgement. I have no reason to.
