AND FOR CHRIST'S SAKE YOST, PUT IN VILLANUEVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yost could quite possibly be the worst manager in the majors right now. nobody costs their team more games.
Yeah. Turnbow has been killing us. I mean, he leads the league in holds (as Ayt pointed out), and has really only had 3 bad games. But yeah, he's been killing us.

I wish I could make the roll-eyes smiley even bigger for this one.

Turnbow is gonna have bad games. It happens. Overall he's been very good. My issue continues to be, what the hell is Yost doing in the late innings with the bullpen? I wasn't suprised with Capallen going in, because he can eat up innings, but you need to have a very short leash there. I would have prefered CV, because the worst case scenario there is he eats up 3 innings and needs to sit for 3 days or so, while saving the rest of the BP. Can't gripe about a 5-1 homestand too much, but this game should have been won.

You do realize you can say that about every game . That if we did something different . We could have won.

Well said. I know how mindboggling it is for some people to realize that both Capellan and Spurling needed to get some work in, it's been awhile for the both of them. Yes, I would have preferred Villanueva in there, but what can you do? The Brewers lost, now they're back to 11 games over .500. WAAAAAH

I was at the game. Gallardo was mowing them down. I saw no reason to take him out but he was on lower pitch counts in Nashville, so Yost might be just trying to ease him into high counts. If anyone knows Gallardo's pitch count, I'd appreciate it. I was sort of upset when Turnbow came in and even more pissed after he blew the lead.
On a whole, I left sort of upset from the loss but in the big picture I was very happy with what unfolded at that game. One win in a 162 game season is fairly meaningless. Finding out your club has a 21 year old pitcher who again looks like a stud, PRICELESS!!
Tough loss but a great showing by Gallardo. Also, Hart hit a bomb strait out of center field off the end of his bat. Holy CRAP!! Tall guys take some time to grow into their bodies. Hart is fast becoming my second favorite Brewer hitter after Fielder.

94 pitches today, 104 last time.
Doesn't really support your idea.

You could be right. I have no confidence in him when he's up in big situations.
Didn't you also say Braun wouldn't amount to much because of the hitch in his swing?

Sure, who knows, Villanueva could have went in and gave up 5 runs, but the fact of the matter is that Yost mismanaged the game once again. I give credit to Capellan for getting through the 10th, but as soon as he walked the first guy in the 11th Yost should have been on the phone to get Villanueva going. Instead, he waits until after he gives up another hit before he calls the bullpen. Which costs us another baserunner and puts us in a situation where we weren't going to get out of it without giving up any runs. I just don't see how you let your most effective pitcher in the pen sit in a tie game.
Sure, I'm very happy that we are 11 games over .500 and taking two out of three is very much acceptable, all I'm saying is that Yost has mismanaged far too many games this year that have cost us potential wins.
The only other thing I'm concerned about is hitting a slump now. It is very important to win this series against the Astros because that ten game trip before the break doesn't look bad, but Pittsburgh has been a house of horrors for us in years past.

Why? Are we not allowed to question a managers decision making?
And maybe Spurling and Capellan did need work. But Spurling pitched yesterday, granted it was only 6 pitches. However he should've worked 2 innings with a 6 run lead, I advocated Spurling in the brewerfan.net chatroom for 2 innings that game.
Or what about the 11-6 game? The Brewers took a 5 run lead in the bottom of the 7th. Perfect time to use Spurling or Capellan. Nope instead Ned uses Turnbow and Wise.
Here are the number of pitches thrown by our relievers from 6/17-6/24
Capellan- 89 pitches (most of the group, he didn't need work)
Cordero- 68 pitches
Shouse- 43 pitches
Spurling- 33 pitches
Turnbow- 55 pitches
Villanueva- 56 pitches
Wise- 35 pitches
So Villanueva was plenty rested and Yost had ample oppurtunity to use Spurling and Capellan in blowouts but chose not to. That goes on Yost.
Spurling should only be used if the Brewers are getting blown out, blowing out another team or in an emergency (like last reliever in the pen.)
Bottom line Ned Yost managed the bullpen poorly this whole week going back to the blowouts where he used Turnbow and Wise and today where he used Capellan and Spurling when Villanueva was available.

He only had 52 pitches going into this game.
And that came June 17. that was the last time he pitched. So he did need the work. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings that game
Why?
Spruling has only given up ONE run since June 10th.

But I forgot the manager has nothing to do with winning games only with loosing them.

Well said well said -
I think there are other factors at work at why certain pitchers were used at certain times. If Turbow would have worked out of it - this board would be 180.
What about Weeks causing the final out, not once, but twice? Right before the pitchers spot forcing Yost to make a switch. So if we had Charlie V in there, he would be pinch hit for - granted hindsight is 20/20, but we lost a pitchers dual. Forget about it and move on, we are still on a roll in my mind.

Yes and if Ned was smart he would've used Capellan in the TWO blowout games the past couple of nights to get him work. And it's not like these guys sit on their asses when they don't pitch. They always long toss, have bullpen sessions etc.
Spruling has only given up ONE run since June 10th.
And that means he should pitch over Villanueva in a tie game? But if you want to use that small sample let's just go back to May 30th. Since May 30th he's given up 5 earned runs in 6.2 innings for a 6.76 ERA.

That's true......I did say that about Braun. Good memory Ayt! I was wrong.
Now does your good memory also help you remember that I said Villanueva and Gwynn Jr. were the 2 most underrated Brewer prospects in our system. That Villanueva prediction sure looks good now especially.
