I've pretty much had it. I gave McHale the benefit of the doubt the past several years, but no more. Unless the offensive and defensive schemes change along with motivating these guys to play harder, I think he needs to go. If we don't have to play moreyball to be effective, then I am all in. Sure McHale is a likeable coach, but he needs to get his X & Os in order.
It seems like we have to hit a bunch of 3s or Harden has to play well to even win. Otherwise, this team has no plan when those 3s aren't falling.

Houston, you done us wrong.
From an outsider's perspective, I think what killed you guys against the Nets, other than a lack of killer instinct (evidenced by the free throw shortage) and the ice age encrusting your 3-point attack, is Ariza not being cut out as a small-ball 4 in a 3 guard line-up. If you go small, the 4 is almost always the position that you try to get the offensive advantage at. Playing 3 high usage guards not only minimizes the usage of the small ball 4, but Ariza isn't the kind of guy who can consistently punish slower 4s. On offense, he doesn't offer much more than your standard stretch 4 of any size. And on defense and the boards, it's obviously expecting way too much to overcome the positional disadvantage, plus share the floor with puny non-rebounder/defenders like Lawson and Thornton.
I'm sure that's not news, but thought I'd share.

McHale being a likable coach doesn't make him a good coach. When McHale got hired, I didn't much care cause we didn't have that great of a team. But now with the additions of Harden and Howard plus Lawson, we can't be wasting these years on a coach that is not good. This teams championship window is now, and they need a good coach to get them there. McHales success has been because of the talent on this team, not because of him. Look what GSW did in one year having the same roster but changing the coaching. McHale is Mark Jackson, we need to find our Steve Kerr.

I don't know if there is a Steve Kerr out there though. I want McHale gone as well but I don't know who would replace him. I don't want Thibs. He wouldn't be good here and he is the most qualified coach available

The problem is if you replace McHale now, then you have to find another quality coach out there available and that is much harder to do. I don't know if Bickerstaff is head coach material at this point. The Rockets need REAL shooters if they're gonna play Moreyball and they really don't have one though Thornton seems to be the closest real shooter they have in a while.

Or better yet how about just firing Kevin McHale!?
McHale is Morey's puppet
You can't keep Morey and fire McHale
No midrange and all 3 are all Morey
Yeah but Morey doesn't draw up the plays to get those looks. GSW does the same thing. 3ams and layups and they won it all because they have a coach who knows how to coach that kind of system. Morey isn't responsible for the 23 seconds of stagnant offense ending with a bad 3 point shot. Morey wants GOOD three point looks not ugly contested ones. And the NO midrange is exaggerated. If we had someone who was effective in the midrange we would use it. Harden gets a decent amount of looks there. Ariza shouldn't shoot in the midrange. Bev shouldn't. Brewer shouldn't shoot anywhere. Jones shouldn't. We don't have the any mid range killers so might as well push them out and stay low efficiency but at least get an extra point.

if you haven't notice GSW players are willing to share the ball
Rockets ... there are few like to hold on to the ball a little longer
some even like to hold it until the shot clock has 3 seconds left

Sharing ball requires some sort of bbiq which this team lacks.
The worst of all the management is powerless against Harden's instinctive freak athleticism one demenstational ball that resembles when Steve Francis was around.
