He completed underachieved with that payroll. It does warm my heart to see big money teams like the Dodgers crash and burn, however.

Not so fast, the Nats hire Dusty Baker. Bud Black never signed any paperwork, word is the Nats offered him a 2 yr/$ 2MM deal which he turned down.

Hart should fire Fredi, and hire Bud.

I have a distinct feeling a few backroom, off-the-record conversations have been had expressing mutual interest.

Black likely feels comfortable sitting out a while longer knowing SOMEONE will come calling by this time next year.

Cardinals Extend Qualifying Offers To Heyward, Lackey

The Cardinals have made $15.8 million qualifying offers to outfielder Jason Heyward and pitcher John Lackey, free agents who were instrumental to the teams' success this season.

St. Louis is likely to attempt to sign the 26-year-old Heyward to a multi-year deal. He hit .293 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs.

Some of these big time free agents are finally starting to sign with teams. Justin Upton goes to Detroit on a 6 year/$132 mil deal. Cespedes is close to re-signing with the Mets, and the D-Backs are close to extending AJ Pollack (he's not a FA, but a big time player nonetheless).

I'd like to see how Justin Upton performs after signing for that type of money.

I was hoping Cespedes would leave New York, but considering his contract should be massive, let the Mets pay him.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Mets and Yoenis Cespedes are discussing a three-year contract that would include an opt-out after the first year.
The Nationals are reportedly offering Cespedes a five-year contract worth around $100 million, but the word is that he'd prefer to stay with the Mets. Whether the Mets' willingness to include an opt-out in their offer is enough to swing the pendulum in their direction remains to be seen. Cespedes could potentially hit free agency again next winter at the age of 31 if he would exercise the opt-out. Olney hears that Cespedes will likely make a decision within the next 24-48 hours.
