Lin's been pretty good, but I don't think he is the answer to our future at point guard

We won't be able to afford our answer at PG if we think we're going to upgrade Kemba on the FA market.

that's pretty much the point I'm making, I can't see our Pg situation changing at all next year

Hey BoB:

Can we sign Al to an in season extension as a part of a S&T type agreement - or can that only happen in the off season?

Melo did it when Denver traded him to New York, but Al Jefferson is not eligible since he didn't sign a four-year contract.

But I don't see any team willing to extend him at this price anyway.

To whatever extent Al's contract holds value is from it's expiring status. Most teams are flush with cash to spend next summer but a few are not. These teams are close to the cap and may bite on a contract like Al's to be FA players, sign their own RFA, or avoid the luxury tax. For different reasons Dallas and Golden State make good candidates.

1 Cleveland Cavaliers 107,615,150
2 Los Angeles Clippers 93,829,597
3 San Antonio Spurs 85,480,753
4 Toronto Raptors 12 82,667,970
5 Houston Rockets 82,094,246
6 Golden State 81,936,140
7 Dallas Mavericks 74,608,407
8 Chicago Bulls 74,375,045

I dont even know why Dallas would take him, Zaza is averaging a double double and they dont have that many big contracts besides Parsons, who im not touching.

best hope is to just let him expire and sign a stop gap center and or draft a center (which is pretty likely IMO)

Is it okay to say that signing Al was a mistake yet or are we still pretending that he was some magical stepping stone towards respectability and postseason glory?

I think Al might be starting to question himself about his decision to opt in. What kind of deals will there be out for him after a season of a lesser role and 13ppg/7rpg/BadDefense?

You'll need to be more specific. Could apply to Jazz also.

It's possible but his agent no doubt understood his value. If there was a market for him he could've signed a 1 year deal eslewhere. The fact Al opted in is fairly solid evidence he knew as well.

Yeah it seems like the big free agent players all have their hopes pinned on 2016, Al would likely have been offered a ton of lucrative single-year deals but no long-term security.

Al is exactly the type of player a bad GM will talk himself into when everything is rapidly drying up in summer 2016.

I know he's way younger, but Enes Kanter got a max contract with 15/9, worse passing, even worse defense, and the team that dumped him for nothing immediately became the hottest defensive teams in the league. I have zero doubt that Al could find himself an 8-figure contract even if he struggles hard this season.

Kanter >>>>>>>>>>>>> Alberto Grande.

Nobody plays worse defense than Al.

Yep, and Kanter could've probably netted more had he not been bound to his years of service restriction. Al could've easily gotten something in that ballpark, Kanter is younger but Al is the better player.

I put Al's decline on the offensive end in numbers and compared it with the previous two seasons:
http://lamarmatic.com/2015/11/15/hawes-over-kaminsky-and-als-decline-on-offense/

It's both a decline in quantity and quality. Getting less looks in the post, converting fewer of them and not getting to the line.

Your statement implies Al could've signed a $70 million contract but chose not to because.

Bravo for confirming with numbers what regular Hornet fans have seen: there is no longer an essential offensive counterbalance for Al's destructive defensive presence.

Your statement below says it all. I've been insisting since pre-season Al is a buyout candidate and for some reason most fans can't grasp that reality. Even in his prime Al wasn't nearly the player his box score stats suggested. On the eve of his 31st birthday and in rapid decline he's more fools gold today then ever.

"There really isn’t a reason for such a version of Al Jefferson not to get the Carlos Boozer treatment."
