Terps women's basketball signs nation's No. 1 recruiting class

Going to back-to-back Final Fours does wonders for recruiting.

Despite losing in the NCAA semifinals each of the past two seasons, the Maryland women's basketball team bolstered its chances of going to the Final Four several more times in the next few years by signing the No. 1 recruiting class in the country Wednesday. After twice assembling the No. 2 class in the country, in 2007 and 2010, this marks the first time Brenda Frese has the top class.

Frese, who has had 11 top-10 classes in her 14 seasons at Maryland, signed six players, four of them ranked in the top 28. The Terps are the only team with more than three players in the top 30.

Destiny Slocum, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Meridien, Idaho, who averaged 25.1 points, 5.6 assists and 5.3 rebounds as a junior, is the No. 7 prospect in the country. Jenna Staiti, a 6-6 center from Cumming, Ga., who averaged 29 points and 16 rebounds as a junior, is ranked No. 17 overall and the third-best post player in the country. Kaila Charles, a 5-11 wing from Glendale, is No. 25 nationally and Blair Watson, a 6-0 wing from Nutley, N.J., is No. 28.

The Terps also signed Stephanie Jones, a 6-2 forward from Havre de Grace (Aberdeen) who is the younger sister of current Terps star Brionna Jones, and Sarah Myers, a 5-10 guard who is also from Cumming, Ga., and plays for one of Staiti's local rivals.

"Overall this is one of the most elite classes we have signed in my time at Maryland," Frese said in a statement. "It is a class that has firepower in every position. Every piece, every single player fits in the overall scheme of what we want to bring here to Maryland to help us continue to win championships.

Turgeon on Replacing Dion Wiley, Diamond Stone's Progress

Maryland basketball coach Mark Turgeon joined ESPN980's Sports Fix on Thursday afternoon and addressed the loss of shooting guard Dion Wiley, who will miss the season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee. Wiley, as Turgeon confirmed, was going to start the season as Maryland's starting shooting guard.

"He had made huge strides. This summer, he might have been our best player. He was really, really good this summer," Turgeon said of Wiley, who will take a redshirt and return next season with three years of eligibility remaining.

"I told him on Tuesday before our exhibition game that he was gonna be my starting two guard, then he gets hurt on Thursday ... I feel bad for him.
He had worked hard. He had really put in a lot of time in the summer to make himself a better defender and a better player," Turgeon said. "You know, he's got a lot of playmaking skills, and that's where we're going to miss him the most. He can not only score the ball but he can make guys around him better, and he had really worked hard to become probably our best perimeter defender behind Rasheed [Sulaimon]."

Turgeon didn't say whether he expects Jared Nickens or Sulaimon to slide into that starting spot, but he did point out that sophomore Jaylen Brantley could benefit the most from the shortened roster.

Wow, I just assumed Sulaimon was always going to be the starting 2. Maybe Sulaimon did a Tonya Harding on Wiley!

Wiley played very well and also, Rasheed asked to come off the bench.

He thought his skills could help the bench better at this point.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien interested in University of Maryland opening

Texans embattled coach Bill O'Brien, perhaps headed to a showdown with general manager Rick Smith this offseason as ownership mulls a change in its power structure, is very intrigued by the opening at the University of Maryland, according to several sources close to the school, and his interest in the job is not lost on the school's primary boosters.

O'Brien, who had a successful but brief college head-coaching stint with Penn State before taking the Texans job, coached previously at Maryland as an assistant and, according to sources close to the school, prominent Maryland alumnus Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour, and other key figures in the hiring process are aware of O'Brien's interest. It is clear to many in the Texans organization that significant change is likely coming, with O'Brien and Smith not both remaining in the current roles in all likelihood, and owner Bob McNair has long championed Smith, creating an uneasy climate within the franchise.

O'Brien is only in his second year with the team, but turmoil has been increasingly common. The Texans are falling far short of expectations, and it is becoming increasingly common for coaches to be gone after just a year or two. The Maryland job is more attractive than many on the outside perceive, especially given Plank's financial and emotional commitment to the school and his desire to turn it into a Big Ten power, including a plan to build state-of-the-art training facilities.

O'Brien's perception as having a difficult demeanor, and of leaving jobs quickly, has not made the prospect of a return to College Park very popular among some alumni -- though his optics generally fit what Plank has told confidants he is looking for: a young (under-50), bright offensive mind who could run an attractive, pro-style offense.

Several rising collegiate coaches are very interested in the job as well. Former Maryland star quarterback Frank Reich, the Chargers' offensive coordinator, is viewed by many as an elite candidate for the vacancy

I am not a huge college basketball fan, but I love a good turf war. Tonight should be fun.

Can't wait for tonight. Even though I live closer to Georgetown, I've always been a big Maryland fan, since the days of Stevie Franchise(he actually lived in the same apartment complex as my Uncle). I got nothing against the Hoyas, and root for them to do well come tournament time, but Maryland is where my heart has always been.

GTown lost to Radford somehow at home, so Maryland could steamroll them, but I expect a close game. FEAR THE TURTLE.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.
