Is former Bobcats assistant, JB Bickerstaff now the new coach of the Rockets?

That assumes no Lin, Marvin, Al, PJ, or Batum, and leaves us four additional roster spots to fill on top of those guys.
We probably can't afford two max deals unless we are also planning on filling half our roster with vet min guys.

Re: Around the NBA 8.0
If Clifford keeps up the good work, I hope we don't jump the gun and fire him. I know I've been calling for his head for about a year now, but I really think he is doing much better with this years team and there aren't really any good options available to replace him. If we were going to fire him it should have been last year when he was performing poorly and we could have maybe replaced him with someone like Mike Malone. I think he eventually needs to try some different things to address the rebounding and defensive issues we are having, but that and a couple minor rotation things are the only problems I have right now.

Batum and someone else. There's our two big fish. Let's go with the pipe dream in Al Horford:
Horford/Hawes
Cody/Frank/our 4th consecutive rookie PF
MKG/someone
Batum/Lamb
Kemba/someone
My guess is that Batum+Horford would combine for about $40M, leaving us $3M in cap space for a backup combo guard, the $3M room exception for some other pieces, and a couple vet mins. Trade Hawes for some bench pieces, and we're fine for depth.

Re: Around the NBA 8.0
Just a rough numbers estimate, but it looks like max deals for 2016-17 might be around $18-18.5M. I looked at max deals for '14/'15 and '15/'16 and it jumped from $14.746MM, up to $16.407MM. Not saying it will be that exact amount for next year, but let's say it goes up another $500K from that additional $1.661M jump YOY..... call it $18.5MM.
Let's say both Whiteside and Batum get max deals, that adds a combined $37M to our cap. If the $43M number is accurate, then we would have $6M left to fill out the roster. Lin is already signed to a 2-year deal, so our roster moving forward would be.....
Kemba/Lin
Batum/Lamb
MKG/??
Kaminsky/Zeller
Whiteside/Hawes
We draft MKG's backup and add another FA SF. Those 10 players plus a couple of Cho FA signings, and we are set with a young, exciting team that can press the ball up the court, drain 3's, balanced defensively and fun to watch. I would have to think top 3 in the east, and able to make some serious noise in the post season.

I think Lin can opt out, so we'll probably have to use some of our cap to resign him. It can probably be done with exceptions and what not, but I'm not a cap expert. I think I like the idea of going after Whiteside. Its going to be expensive and risky, but he could be the missing piece we need and hes a hometown guy.

You cant start Cody and MKG together. We cant have two guys who cant shoot outside of 5 feet in the starting lineup. We saw way too much of that the last few years. Those days are over. Cody needs to be a backup center.

Zeller needs to be a starting center. This trying to be a stretch 4 crap has already inhibited enough of his growth. He should start next year alongside Frank.

Cap changes aren't linear year to year, they're based on Basketball Related Income (BRI). BRI isn't even calculated until July, which is why the official cap numbers aren't even released until right before Free Agency starts.
Likewise, "max" contracts vary based on player experience. Based on early projections of an $89M salary cap, Batum would be eligible for a max contract starting at $26.7M. The max for Whiteside would be around $22.25M.
I doubt either nets THAT much, but these new contracts are gonna be crazy.

Re: Around the NBA 8.0
It's sad what's happened to Ty Lawson in Houston. He's gone from borderline All-Star to a ghost.
Not as bad but similar is Goran Dragic in Miami -- he was a max-deal player two years ago, now he's barely a 4th option.

Good call, sir. I remember you being the cap master and being very knowledgable on this topic. Thanks for clearing that up!
Well, so much for my pipe dream of signing both Whiteside and Batum. At this point, I'd rather have Batum and find a 5 to put alongside Kaminsky. I agree with Liver Pooty in putting Zeller at C. Zeller is looking way more physical this year and getting his points in the paint.

It would be shocking to me if Whiteside didn't get maxed out this summer, he's a top 20 player in the NBA rn, he's prime Dwight defensively if not better.

what rebounding issues? we're leading the league in DefREB& and might finish first in that department for the third year in a row.

Seems like we've been outrebounded the last few games.
