Larry Baer was on CSNBA Sports Talk Live. Said they were looking for starting pitchers, maybe in free agency, maybe through trades, maybe through the farm system.

They were fifth in payroll last year, paid a little bit of luxury tax. Says they expect to increase spending a notch but said they will never spend like the Dodgers or the Yankees because those are much bigger markets. But doesn't think they have to spend as much in order to field a championship contender.

They'll present recommendations to the board and see how much if any they want to raise payroll. Says there may be $50 million coming off payroll but in reality, a lot of signed players will see their salary go up as well as arbitration-eligible players probably seeing their salaries rise as well.

But also said that because they had "elite" play in the infield from Duffy, Panik who are not earning a lot yet, that they could afford to spend more for other positions like starting pitching.

The O was so damn good last year.

I'd be shocked if they played this offseason like last year's. I bet they end up overspending for Price, Greinke or Zimmerman.

A little late, but...

Giants sign Brandon Crawford to new, $75M contract

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fresh off his Gold Glove award last week, San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford agreed to a $75 million, six-year contract Tuesday that takes him through the 2021 season.

Thoughts? I'm getting mixed reactions from Giant fans.

I love the deal. Crawford has only improved every year in the league. If he takes another step next season, this will considered a huge discount.

He has to hit slightly below to around what he did in 2015 for the next few seasons to justify this deal. I have to wait and see, hopefully it wasn't just a career year offensively. He was about a .245/.310/.385 plus glove player before 2015, not sure that is worth $15M a year from age 31-34.

Olney: Giants and Dodgers possibly competing for Braves starting pitcher Shelby Miller.

Supposedly it's either the Dodgers or Giants in the final running to sign Greinke, who wants a 5-6 year deal at a higher annual average than the 7-year $217 million deal that David Price just signed with the Red Sox.

Wow a lot of money for pitchers over 30.

I'd definitely be happy with a 5 year deal, and OK with a 6 year deal. Taking LA's #2 would be worth the overpay. The Dodgers are in a tough situation.
