I had a thanksgiving themed party tonight "friendsgiving" with my girlfriend so i missed the game. I tried not to even be on my phone and checked for updates just three times throughout the night. Wow.

CJ Miles and Paul George combined for 15-17 from three. As a team they hit a club record 19.

Our defense was at it again. Forced them to 21 turnovers and Pacers got 11 steals. Wizards are not a bad team if they connect on their three pointers, and they actually did a decent job on us. Nearly 40%.

I thought this would be a pretty telling match up. Pretty good team on their home floor. Larry Bird had to be loving this game. Rolling with small ball from the start, they quickly realize two bigs simply can't be on the floor together and move to their version of small ball. They stay with us for a half, come the second half we get a little more serious about playing defense and win fairly comfortably. At the end of the day we deliver a pretty nice imitation of GSW's basketball.

Looking forward to Chicago on Friday. See what happens when it's played on our floor with a full complement of players. Is it possible that we are the 2nd best team in the East?

We're way ahead of where I thought we were after three games. It turns out that our schedule started with some tough games that were made even tougher by our need to get used to the new setup. I doubt the last Chicago game would have been a one point loss had George Hill played, but you are right that Friday will be a big test.

Going forward, I think a lot depends upon Monta Ellis. I'm hoping he can be a lot more productive later in the season after he becomes comfortable with his new teammates. If he can be Frank Gore and not Andre Johnson, we can be very good. That does assume no serious injuries though.

It will be interesting to see if Monta can take up the slack when we run into teams with stud wing defenders capable of slowing Paul down. I think you are right that he still appears to be finding his way on this team. He does appear to be handling pg duties better when George Hill is out of the game than he did in the first 5 or 6 games and that's a positive.

The Wiz were suppose to be better than the Pacers what happened?

Looks like somebody forgot to tell PG and Miles!! If it hadn't been for Gary Neal we would have beat them by 30.

This is great! I was just spending a few minutes reading the game thread on the Wizards board. I grabbed this quote from one of their Mods.

nate33 wrote:Glad I missed this one. Looks like it was more of the same. Too many Wall turnovers. Too many shots from Beal at mediocre efficiency. Not enough defense.

Frank Vogel has to be the most underrated coach in the league. At the start of the season, nobody would have considered Ian Mahinmi and C.J. Miles to be starting caliber players. Outside of Paul George, nobody on their roster is even above-average at their position. Yet Vogel has them at 9-5.

Heck, last year, Indiana was complete garbage to start, and then suffered a wave of injuries, yet managed to win 38 games.

I tell you what, the East is starting to accumulate some of the very best young coaches in basketball. There's Frank Vogel, Mike Budenholzer, Brad Stevens and Erik Spoelstra who are all top 10 coaches. It's too early to assess Hoiberg in Chicago, but he might be another real good one. And there's obviously Stan Van Gundy (who isn't young anymore, but he's damn good). This is a big factor in why the East is catching up the West lately.

This is a compliment to Vogel but how about that part I put in red? Nobody on our roster is better than average? I didn't make a comment on it there and none of us should run over there and give them a hard time about it, but this was and still is the attitude that too many Realgm'ers have about the Pacers. We were suppose to stink, we have no bigs, we're forced to start PG at pf because we gots nothin' else, ect.

As far as none of our guys being better than average (Except PG) somebody forgot about George Hill.

Not to mention our depth. J Hill, Godney, Budinger, Myles when healthy, Lavoy...our 11th man is pretty good, too.

Some people forget that basketball is a team sport you don't always need the best players to win

I like to check out the other teams game thread and see if they're belly aching about getting beat by the Pacers. Right now PG is one of the 10 best players in the NBA an if you're talking about 2 way he might be the best. I love the kid he makes me proud to be a fan of his.

CJ Miles is a starting caliber player. I have always assumed a starting shooting guard and not a de-facto starting power forward, but there you have it.

And I am surprised at the lack of respect Monta gets. The beginning of last year especially showed that he can be the number one scorer on the league's then-best offense. This year he has upped his defense, playing multiple positions, and is doing lots of little things that count. I think we have only begun to see what he can do in our uniform. That's below average how?

Also deserving of a shout-out: Frank Vogel has this team adjusting nicely to a completely new offensive and defensive scheme. What a coach.

I think it's because he's a career 19.2 ppg player and is averaging only 12.5 ppg so far this season. People expect more on offense from him.

Monta doesn't have to score as much with the Pacers because of PG.
