Porzingis' defense

Post#1 » by AllanH20 » Fri Dec 4, 2015 6:29 pm

His defense is incredible for someone who's only played 19 games, it's unbelievable. He's right up there with the best big men in the league. I've included stats for Lopez, DeAndre, Draymond, and Gobert. Draymond is a level above the rest but KP is right there with the others (and he's better than Jordan who's incredibly overrated and falls for everything). KP is also much better than Lopez and Gobert at guarding long 2s and 3s.

There's been a lot of attention to what he can do on offense but the most impressive thing about him is that he's already one of the best defensive bigs in the league. I remember there was a stat from a couple of weeks ago that we're 4th in league in defense when he's on the floor and 23rd when he's off. It's undeniable that Lopez's presence is helping him but this someone that you can build your defense around for a decade. He's being very underrated in that aspect (especially by non-Knick fans). There's still this idea that he's not that great on defense because he needs to get bigger (which he doesn't, it will take away from his mobility and make him more susceptible to injury) but his length is more than enough to make up for that.

It's actually mind-boggling how good he is at defense with such little NBA experience. He's already mastered going vertical and challenging shots at the rim without fouling, and he has no fear or laziness of doing so.

I don't think it's being underrated at all. Every story or comments made by non Knicks fans credit him with being a two way player.

Even if he doesn't develop his offensive game, a defensive anchor that can stretch the floor is a piece you can build around, and will be one of the most coveted types of players around the league.

It really is mind blowing how much of an impact Porzingis has on both ends as a rookie, his potential to do more, and that he is on the Knicks

We're already starting with the whole media doesn't respect KP enough they are underrating him narrative... The media can't get enough of KP. He had a damn commercial made for him already on ESPN. Enjoy it. We're already going overboard with the hype as it is.

I thought he'd be good on D didn't expect it to happen this fast though. He's already providing consistent above average to excellent defense.

Fair enough about the underrated part (I meant by non-Knick fans, just look at the general board). Anyway, I changed the title.

I agree. ESPN loves him and he has a great personality. Ib think he'll become a very popular player and a media darling. It's already happening. Phil potentially drafted a superstar.

His impact on D is very similar to AK47 and Garnett. Mobile bigs who loved contact and defense.

His defense is so delicious...

What I love about is when a guard goes to the paint they are afraid to attack with Porzingis down there now.

Back with Amare out there, they would fly by and Amare would make a stupid face

To this day, I don't understand why anyone would want to do that. It's the Stephen A. Smith of forums.

I don't think his defense has been overlooked at all - if anything, it has shined brighter than his offense since day 1 (on a more consistent basis, at least).

Anyways, nice job pulling the stats. Cool to see them put up against other high level defenders (besides DJ who, while getting better, is still primarily just an athlete on defense).
