so...everything I said last night
Playing McRoberts at the 5 makes no sense though, regardless. He doesn't have the skills to take advantage of his size against Dudley, isn't quick enough to guard Dudley on the perimeter, provides terrible help defense and isn't a good enough rebounder to hurt Washington.
McRoberts should be used to draw a defender out of the paint on defense because of his shooting threat (which is a conversation for another time). By playing McRoberts at the 5 against a team that was using Jared Dudley as the 5, you're giving Washington all the advantages of playing small with none of the disadvantages. They can still take advantage of the poor perimeter defense and positional awareness that playing a big covering a wing gives you while having no negative on defense, as all Dudley had to do was guard McRoberts on the perimeter. The decision was indefensible. You either match all the way down (which we couldn't really do, due to Deng missing) or you pound them down low by playing with bigs. Instead, we played in between and got punished for it.
