Re: All 22 ; on Gabbert
If only we had Hyde going and getting early down yardage to reduce the amount of third and longs...oh wait that could cause us to win some games and effect our draft slot. Nevermind.

Thanks for sharing, good read. Not that Gabbert's great or that Kaepernick didn't have his positives, but it would be interesting to see All-22 on similar plays.

With Gabberts ability to be mediocre, and Hydes ability to reduce 3rd and longs we probably could win some games. Mediocrity at QB can't do it on it's own though.

Re: All 22 ; on Gabbert
Interesting read. Gabbert has been a pleasant surprise. I was a little surprised when some people in the press early in the year were referring to him as the worst backup in the league. He was the worst starter at one time, but that statement just reflected an absolute lack of awareness as to how bad some backup QBs are.
I said going into Gabbert's first start - and I think said even back when they brought him in - that his upside is Alex Smith. It's early yet, but I think I actually sold him short - despite regarding him more highly than most. I haven't seen much of Alex since he went to KC, but I think Gabbert may already be better. There are marked similarities - accuracy, intelligence, (over)willingness to check down - but I think Gabbert has already shown better pocket presence and more of a live arm than Smith did while he was here. That said, my fear is that Gabbert will be like Smith in that he's just good enough to keep around, but not ever be very good or great. Despite the failed Kaepernick experiment, I still think it was the right call to go with him over Smith given his upside. Smith is just good enough to keep you competitive, but commands too much of a salary to build the sort of team you really need around him to win. At present, though, I'd certainly rather have Gabbert for say $8 million than Kap for $16.
It was insightful to read and watch the 3rd and long stuff. I had assumed it was Gabbert not wanting to take a chance, but it looks like that may not be entirely correct. The staff has been far too conservative in a season when, at this point, we should just be cutting loose and taking some chances. I said just before the final 4th down against Arizona, "I don't care what happens, just throw the ball past the marker." And immediately after that, we gain 18. But it looks like that may be more a product of the playcalling than Gabbert.
I'm interested to see what Gabbert does against some lesser Ds than the Cards and Hawks. Those are still two top Ds - and the Bears have been surprisingly good against the pass. Who knows, maybe he continues to surprise and stakes a claim to be the longterm starter.

I know that based on who this is coming from what I say is going to be discounted. But I don't think he is there yet. I think Gabbert has potential to be better, but he's not already there when you're taking everything into account. He does have certain aspects that are better than Smith. While people will see me as biased, I have seen every game of Smith in Kansas City. He has played better there with a bigger emphasis on passing. We all have our opinions and I'm not calling Smith great or good enough.
I would like to see more games played by him and the more experience he gets, the better he'll get (as well as teams having film on him) and that might include higher than what your ceiling was. I'm not really talking about skill but rather overall quarterbacking and experience. Gabbert should catch up a bit on that. Sitting on the bench is not the same as playing.
Note that despite my fandom, I never argued against the quarterback switch when Kaepernick took over for Smith and I never said that Smith was great. I think that if Smith were playing this year when Kaepernick was benched, we would see what Gabbert is doing or better (again, not talking about skill and how, just moving the ball). But as I said, experience is key and time off the bench is not the same as playing. Gabbert is getting some good time in there right now.

Re: All 22 ; on Gabbert
Yeah, probably not fair for me to compare him to Smith at this point; I guess I'd say compared to Smith when he was playing for the Niners. Arguably Smith's biggest problem while here was that he never really developed much pocket presence. Oh, he was light-years ahead of Kap, but still pretty poor in that area. That's one of the areas where I've been shocked with Gabbert's play - I figured he would really struggle there, but he's been very good about eluding pressure and keeping his eyes downfield.

My concern with Gabbert are his downfield and deep throws. Short sample size but his downfield passes are really inaccurate. I saw two potential TDs to Torrey Smith that were stopped because of short inaccurate passes

I'm rooting for Gabbert to play well while we lose (improving everywhere) and draft a QB. That would give us time to develop the rookie, trade someone if needed (if Gabbert shocked the world/fan base), or start the rookie if he wins a QB competition.

Kaepernick WANTS OUT. All the talk should be about Gabby and Chip being a nice fit, rather than Kaep and Chip

He deserves to be traded to the Eagles who need a cheap starting QB

He deserves a chance to again show that Kaep is a mental midget.

I'm really hoping and praying that the team does the right thing and moves on from Kaepernick. The media is going crazy about Kelly and Kaepernick and it pisses me off.

He would've wanted out if Tomsula was still around but with Chip as coach the best move for his career is to stick around.
Chip has the most potential to maximize his talent and he'll make the most money remaining a 9er.
He might have no love for the front office but his like or dislike for them isn't important and it's a simple mater if he performs he'll stick around and if he sucks again he'll be gone.
I'd be surprised if he isn't on the roster next season but the difference will be is he'll have to earn his job and the team won't build or count on him going forward unless he has a great season.
