The State of C.J. Watson's Horribly Strained Calf

What is up with C.J. Watson? Clearly he is suffering from the worst strained calf in the history of orthopedic medicine.

C.J. hasn't played since November 9, more than a month ago. He's missed 14 games, and last I heard he was only doing non-contact stuff. I suspect the injury is more than a strained calf. But the team could really use him back. His experience and 3-point shooting would be huge off the bench. With Oladipo coming off the bench now, that could be a sick backcourt tandem going against other team's reserves.

I agree. Our teams missed him more than some may realize. We played very efficiently with him in the lineup even though his numbers at the time weren't staggering. Napier's super streaky and can have some nice assist games but C.J.'s vet presence is really missed.

Hopefully he's back soon. I'm really surprised the media has been dead silent on it, even Denton never brings it up.

I hoestly have no idea and have also been wondering a lot whats going on with him.

My initial assumption was that a "strained calf" is a made up BS injury to showcase Napier more so we can package him with somebody in a trade. Aside from that it didnt make sense to me why we've been EXTREMELY reluctant to play him and its been also EXTREMELY hush hush.

Now I have diminished my faith in that assumption and think that there's a possibility something deeper is going on with him.

lol I know, what is the deal with his injury?

he was shooting like doodoo before the injury but he's too good of a shooter for that to last...also his defense and how he organizes the floor will be a great boost

He and Oladipo were really good together. When paired they are a very good +13.8 eFG% differential and a +22.7 Pt Minus Opp PTs.

Anyone who has ever had a lower calf strain will tell you that they can take a long time to heal and re-injure quite easily. Often, strains and injuries to the lower calf include the achillies tendon as well.

I had one playing competitive tennis. Tried to come back too early, re-injured it. Ended up taking months to heal completely.

I'm actually happy that we were still able to win the majority of our games with him out. When he gets back this team will be even more balanced and dangerous. It's very important he come back as it gives us someone a little more competent when Elf needs a breather. CJ knows how to run an offense and is a better shooter than Bazz. Also better defensively and at grabbing boards every once and awhile. Need you back soon CJ.

The good thing we could take from his injury is that napier wont be in the league too much longer, he's waaay too streaky, he's just a shooter and if the ball isnt going in (like the past month) he will come short to survive in this league with so many good PG's, we need his vet presence, and i agree with the OP, it will be exciting to watch our second unit.

Hopefully im wrong, but the heat (Pat) gave him away from nothing, Pat is a great gm who knows what's he doing all the time, Nazz is just too small, 170 lbs. and sub-par defender, he's talented tho, no doubt, but unfortunately for him, he's a PG, if he stays in the league he will be the 3rd pg in any team IMHO

Shabazz is what he is. He's a streak shooter who can win you games when he is hot. He is not your main backup PG. You bring him in for 3-5 minutes a game, see if he's hot, if he is you ride him if not you sit him back down. It's unfortunate we have to rely on him as our backup PG right now, but it's not an NBA season without injuries.

Jameer was built like an ox tho...

I watched Shabazz a few times w Miami last year and he was hot garbage...He has actually surprised me with the Magic, much better floor manager and way more aggressive than anything he showed in Miami...kind of a perfect 3d pg for Magic - cheap and capable of temporarily stepping in and holding things down. He looks like he will eventually develop into a solid 2nd PG but that's likely his ceiling.

Magic doctor's have a horrible rep. Most of the Orlando docs in general are poor. Probably 5-6 in each specialty that would hold their weight in a major market and be considered top notch. This is not a Medical Hub city and the UCF Med School doesn't count...sorry....
