Joe Johnson Will Sign with the Miami Heat *Updated

Post#1 » by twix2500 » Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:48 pm

The Joe Johnson watch has begun, well it actually started last summer. The Miami Heat have been keeping an eye on Johnson for a while now, expecting a buyout sometime this season. Its very well known that the Heat need shooters, specifically at the small forward spot, and Joe Johnson would answer that void and more. Well news has started to trickle of a buyout between Nets and Joe Johnson. Expect that news to pick up all the way to the trading deadline if not sooner.

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2015/12/13/will-nets-buy-out-joe-johnson-if-they-dont-trade-him/

Spoiler:
Will Nets buy out Joe Johnson if they don’t trade him?

The Nets reportedly weren’t going to buy out Deron Williams.

Then, they did.

Could Brooklyn follow the same path with Joe Johnson, who was reportedly staying once Williams’ completed his buyout?

Marc Stein of ESPN:

There are some folks around the league who wonder if the Nets would consent to buying out Johnson after the Feb. 18 trade deadline if they can’t move him.

The Nets are having a miserable season, Johnson especially. His points per game (11.3) is his lowest in 13 years, and his field-goal percentage (36.4%) and 3-point percentage (28.4%) are career lows. At age 34, he might just be over the hill.

I can’t imagine there will be much of a trade market for him.

His $24,894,863 salary complicates matters. Even if teams are interested in dealing for him, it’ll be difficult to send out enough salary to make a trade legal under the NBA’s matching rules.

If Johnson remains in Brooklyn past the trade deadline, the Nets would have little use for him. They’re 7-16 and have practically no chance of getting into the playoff race.

But they also owe the Celtics an unprotected first-round pick. So, there’s no value in playing worse late in the season. Brooklyn might as well try to win as many games as possible.

So, it’ll come back to Johnson. How much salary is he willing to sacrifice to become a free agent? The answer to that question might depend on what options he’d have elsewhere. Johnson has struggled so far, but maybe a winner sees his talent and believes the veteran could contribute in a limited role.

I suppose it’s possible the Nets – already under the luxury-tax line and in no danger of losing draft position – are completely against a buyout. They might rather pay Johnson’s full salary rather than getting a discount in exchange for letting him leave. He’s still a big name.

But I suspect Johnson would give up some money to leave and Brooklyn would let him leave if he gives up enough money. It’s just a matter of whether those ranges overlap.

The one close hanger is Joe Johnson cares about money. Is he willing to give up money for the quest of a championship? The Nets would be willing to let him go if they can save some money, but Johnson might be willing to play out his contract to keep every penny. But if a buyout does happen, expect title contenders to come knocking on his door. Heat, Cleveland, Clippers, Mavs and others will likely be at his front door the very first second he becomes a free agent.

How would Joe Johnson fit would be perfect? Not only he is a shooter, but he is a defender, a ball handler and has ice in his veins to take big shots. He would be an instant impact of this heat team. Johnson compliments Wade and Winslow, unlike Deng. The biggest impact of all would likely be for Dragic. We all seen how well Dragic looks with Green, it should be exponentially better with Johnson. How he fits with the roster would not be the only impact. But adding a player of his caliber without losing anything, would allow us to be big in the trading market without losing depth. As the Heat would be able to offer a package of Winslow, McBob and Deng for the likes of DeMarcus Cousins.

Boogie Cousin is the other player the Heat are keeping a close eye on. In a perfect world, the Heat would be able to add both Cousins and Johnson, and amazingly improves its flexibility to go after Durant, that could lead to one of the most ultimate lineups of all time. But before we get too far ahead with our fantasy team cough* cough* (Dragic, Wade, Durant, Bosh, Cousins, Whiteside, Johnson, TJ, Green).

First thing first, the Heat must present itself as contenders in order to compete in the bidder war for Johnson. It is highly important to stay neck to neck with the top teams in the east and maybe in the league, so that wouldn't be a pitch opposing teams would have against the Heat. Along with being a fit, respectable franchise and a contender, one pitch the Heat will have over others, they will have cap room this summer to resign Johnson to a respectable deal.

The Heat still have its work ahead of them. Hopefully the Heat can continually improve as a unit, as well as individuals such as Deng and McRoberts to increase their trade value. The Heat could be on track in remaking the team into a star budded roster only a year and half removed from the departure of Lebron James, with the start of adding Joe Johnson.

We need to continue to add 2010 FAs to this team, I agree. Should work out fine for us.

He'll be a Clipper or a Spur next season.

Joe has proved how good of a shooter he is over his career. He'd be fine as spot up guy or an escape valve in the offense. He just isn't fit for the role the Nets have him in. He's a role player forced to masquerade as a #1 or #2 option.

That being said, I highly doubt he comes here even if he is bought out.

Wait... Boogie Cousins as in Demarcus Cousins? Huh what where? How would that be possible and why haven't we done it if it is??

I would take JJ, Jack, Future 1st for Dragic, Deng, McBob, and Anderson. We free up almost another max slot for next year. Get a couple of useful fits to help us make the playoffs this year . Have enough money to give Whiteside if the organization feels like he's worth it along with enough money to add another high end piece. Open's up a roster spot or two to add players like Whittington or a bought out free agent. Recoup a first rounder.

Ok... so JJ and Jack are expirings. In essence you are trading Dragic for a future 1st (in essence trading two of our picks for one of theirs.) Why is this a good idea? Add to that the fact that Brooklyn has sent their foreseeable picks to Boston (including swap rights), so this might get complicated (as in they aren't doing the trade even if you sent Bosh).

It's more like cutting our losses. We get Dragic's 85 million back to use for a better fit in free agency next year. I would do it if we could atleast recoup one of the first we gave up for Dragic in order for a free agent do over next year.

Look, do you *really* think that Dragic is playing as well as he will for us? People are just crazy tonight. I can see why N82 got frustrated (not justifying his words, but I see why he is upset).

hasta mañana - I'm off to celebrate a victory over Memphis (the first time since James slithered off to Cleveland).

Dragic is lost playing in the half court. Unless we have a philisophical change in offense he will continue to be a bad fit. If we are not going to use him properly then i am suggesting we find someone who is a better fit with the money we have tied up into him next year.

Trust me bruh i want Dragic to work. I know he can work but only if we install an offense that caters to his strengths. He's standing in the corner watching Wade most of the time. Something that he complained about when he departed the Suns last year.

The more versatile you are the more dangerous you are to an opponent. Dragic prefers to play in transition, however he is a good point guard in the half court too. I can post videos of when he was with the Suns all night long, but you've seen enough basketball to know it's true. Dragic is a player of rare intelligence. He's not playing well, however by the time we are in the postseason (which is the only time that really matters provided we win enough to get there), Dragic and Wade will be playing like two parts of the same.

And I do trust you, man. I know you want the best for the team. It's just really important when things are tough to be tougher. Dragic has that quality too. So must we.

I would love Joe Johnson here. We need shooters on this team and Iso Joe has proven that's he's a shot maker over the course of his career.

Danny Granger has proven the same.

There's seem to a misunderstanding regarding the linear nature of time when it comes to JJ.
