Giants Sign Johnny Cueto

Post#1 » by Stanford » Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:51 pm

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that Cueto will be guaranteed $130MM wTwitter link). The contract contains both a club option for the 2017 season and an opt-out clause after two seasons, which would give Cueto the ability to hit the free-agent market again in advance of his age-32 season. As we saw with Zack Greinke this winter, that timing can be highly beneficial to a pitcher.

I love it. Still need an outfielder though.

I'm really just glad they're willing to spend some money.

YES! Pitching is back in the Bay! If we can get Jeff S. stable as he was at the end of the year and keep Heston's development on track, we could be looking at a dominate rotation of Bummy, Cueto, Samardzija and Heston. Peavy and Cain will fight for the 5th spot and be the insurance if someone goes down. Damn if Cain can regain his previous form or even some of it were so dangerous.

On the outfield subject we made a few moves on the down low and the team wants to develop their prospects in the outfield. We signed Kyle Blanks from the Rangers. Kid is huge (6'6' 265) but that is all I know about him. Also Grant Green from the Angels. Doesn't look to see action in the show but you never know. I really want Jarrett Parker or Danny Carbonell to develop into real major leaguers. Keep the chain of bats coming up year after year like Duffy, Panik, Belt, Crawford and Posey.

I'd be perfectly fine giving Parker the start and hoping for a Matt Duffy type situation. That'll give them space under the luxury tax to get someone in the season (maybe a left fielder.)

I forgot to add Mac Williamson. Been rising in the farm system 2012. Last year at only 24 went from AA to the show in one year and looks legit. So we have options. Summer League really show us who is the cream and who is the cement.

So between Parker, Carbonell, Williamson, Blanks and Green we have options and competition in left. I think they need to sign someone as insurance in case they don't produce or Pagan or Blanco go down again. I would sleep a lot easier if we could sign Gerardo Parra or Travis Synder for some experience.

Give me Parra in left.

Perfect giants type of player. Ive heard Boche talk glowingly about him last season. Blanco can then platoon in center because something will go wrong health wise with pagan.

Happy about this signing. No more kicking the tires.

Tire kicking is OK sometimes. It would have been a disaster if they went all in on Pablo and Tomas last year.

No risk no reward! That's the way FA is.

Statistically he has been the second best pitcher (behind Kershaw) in the last 5 years. I'm really liking this signing. Our rotation is going to be nasty.

And it doesn't deplete the farm like it would mid season.

should add that the samardzija signing in essence did deplete the farm because of the QO he turned down from the white sox. First rounder was coughed up on our end.

anyways...its a ghost town around here :(

It alot more active during the season. We're got some solid regulars (myself, Stanford, Wavy, TLS, GS Warriors, and Turco). Probably missing a couple other guys as well.

Forgot to visit these parts after the Cueto signing. I thought Samardzija would be the only major signing to the starting staff, but Cueto was certainly a pleasant surprise.
