I know very little about Gard's coaching ability, but I'm already rooting against him. And that's Bo's fault.

He got hissy prior to the season because Gard wasn't crowned his successor when Alvarez insinuated he would broaden his search when Bo retired.

This is an "F You" to Barry. He holds the power at the end of the day.

I feel the same way. Could've had Smart. Now we are going to have a dog crap season under a no-name coach and lose all of the momentum of the FFs.

I'm biased but I guess I feel that he deserves to go out how he wants. And if it's this way then so be it

It was a press conference after the Texas A&M CC game.

This makes 3 straight coaches leaving Barry under somewhat unusual circumstances. Not sure what that says about him.

Bennett and G Marshall would be on my list. Any others?

Yeah, Gard was the reason Bo was contemplating coaching longer, so the timing could be better to make the transition to Gard then, or Bo could offer his services longer in exchange for choosing his successor basically. And now Gard is the reason to handle his retirement this way. Gard gets his half season+ audition now. Taking a page out of one of his mentor's, Dick Bennett's book. Also made a final four and called it quits in the middle of that next season. Then of course Soderberg got his audition and it didn't go so well. Therefore the AD (I think it was Richter then, could be wrong) cut bait. If the team continues the top 4 streak and/or wins a couple games in the NCAA tourney, that would give Alvarez something serious to think about this time. But if they have pedestrian results in either, especially if we don't make the tourney or we get dropped in the first to leave a bad taste in mouths, Barry is going in another direction. Gard has to prove to be a difference maker strategically or motivationally when he's unproven recruiting-wise as the face of a program.

This is a great way to go out for Bo, not losing sight of what happened the previous two seasons. Didn't come close to those types of tourney performances prior, then does it in back to back seasons. Got it in just under the wire it turns out. His legacy would have been positive, but not nearly to the same degree if he didn't. Good for him.

Really glad I got to see the UNC/AZ games in the Sweet 16/Elite 8 last season. Very special times.

Man, sad to see Bo go. He's a good enough coach that UW may never see another close to him in any of our lifetimes.

Guess I don't understand the dad thing. If that was the situation, couldn't they gone into the season as Bo as the Head Coach and promote Gard to as associate head coach or something and imply he will transition? And why is he the "interim" head coach in that case? If he was the choice in the summer, he would've been named Head Coach. The dad thing is such a cop-out. If you are playing hard-ball to get your guy the gig, don't come up with some phony excuse. Just say its time and step aside.

There are other rumors flying around about the retirement if no one mentioned on previous pages. Not something I will substantiate on here...but they're going around Madison pretty quickly.

EDIT: I see someone mentioned them.

Push all your chips to the center of the table for Tony Bennett.
We're going to turn this team around 360 degrees.

ya no way Smart was coming here..Marquette made a run after him and was close but he backed out..he wasn't coming to Wisconsin though..the Badgers will get a good coach though if Gard doesn't work out..think Bennett would be perfect but don't know if he leaves Virginia..if not think the should go after Greg Marshall and think he would come

I still firmly believe that Bennett's dream job is UW. I think he'll be the hire. He's in a great situation right now, but UW is home.

I doubted he'd come back. Seems happy at UVA, better recruiting area, premier conference, etc.

That said, a moderately plugged in person I talked to said he thinks Bennett would at least listen.

I'd put Bennett and greater than zero and Smart at negative chances, even before jumping to Texas.

I'm going to miss having Ryan in the Big 10. He was the only Big10 coach to strike fear in me as a Spartan fan. I agree you should try to go all in for the young Bennett.

Yeah Shaka was not coming to UW. Rumors are that he may be the next coach at UNC depending on how he handles the Texas job.
