You've just been installed as the new head coach. What do you differently?

Thought it would be a good topic to get some discussion going.

1. Everyone on the floor moves and must touch the ball per possession.
2. Anyone that over dribbles or holds onto the ball when someone is free to receive it or has worked hard to be open, will get benched immediately.

We did this in a HS Varsity game once and it worked, lol. We can only take two dribbles and must immediately pass the ball or shoot it. If we take more dribbles then you get benched.

I just want to see more movement. I want players rotating and the ball to be moving.

More half court drills . Tired of this pseudo-SSOL meets predictable dribble drive penetration kickout offense. NO MORE IMPROVISING ON THE FLY . Now obviously our guards don't posses playmaking abilities and the BBIQ to run a read and react motion system so they need set plays to give them direction. AND THESE SHOULD BE DRAWN UP NOT JUST FOR CRUNCHTIME. Make it clear that you don't run down the clock and unnecessarily ISO only to attempt a contested low percentage shot instead of involving the wings. More emphasis on off the ball screens and backdoor baseline cuts . high entry passes into the post and pocket passes to the rolling finisher. More clean pick n pop action to set up our Stretch 4s.

PJ Tucker and Ronnie Price do not see the court. Booker takes over as the backup 3. Goodwin takes Price's minutes (at the 2, with Knight or Bledsoe playing the 1 during that time).

I utilize Warren and Booker more. Even if they are there for spacing on given plays, I have them move so that they are options other than standing at/in the corner.

I run designed sets to get Booker and Knight open from 3, particularly on out of bounds calls to be used in end of game scenarios. i would literally steal the sets Atlanta uses for Korver.

I coach defense constantly until it improves, and any turnover resulting from not expecting the ball gets you benched. I'd deal with the guard-based turnovers on the side with Knight and Bledsoe via private meetings/sessions, and bring it teamwide with drills once the defense has progressed and we have more practice time.

For the rest of the year, I'd focus on team defense, turnovers, and individual skill development.

IIRC the Spurs actually practice like this. Can't dribble for more than 3 seconds unless you're Tony Parker/Ginobili or Kawhi.

Step 1: Nail Hornacek's daughter (I know dick move) j/k
Step 2: Start the youth and see who handles the pressure better
Step 3: Mix-Match youth with Bledsoe/Knight/Len/Chandler
Step 4a: Tell Kieff that he will get traded when the right offer comes around (he should be traded to an awful team)
Step 4b: Trade Tucker for a pick and send him to a contender (he doesn't deserve to be rewarded but fine)
Step 5: Tank for the highest pick possible if players need extra time to gel
Step 6: Go after high-IQ players in FA and if you can't sign them then repeat Step 2/3
Step 7: Stop aiming for the garbage 8th seed unless we can pull of an upset (read: NO)

Bonus:

- The Phoenix Suns branding needs an update and the identity should be more modern
- Build a new stadium that will make everyone in the NBA talk about how amazing it is to play in AZ
- Bring in NBA legends to help build/market this team (Barkley/Nash/etc)
- Come up with a new system (i.e. SSoL) and reinvent the NBA once more

Seems easy. I especially like point 1.

Hire John Stockton to coach Bledsoe and Knight the PnR (would hire Nash, but he's on that other team)

Run more high-screens and plonk Booker in one corner and Teletovic/Leuer in the other, with Warren running round like a madman for back-cuts and offensive rebounds.

I still can't stand him, but I'd use Kieff at the top of the key. Run some switches so he gets the bigger C on him and he either beats him off the dribble or he penetrates inside and kicks it to the gunners in the corner. Dude has skills and he can pass. Seriously I would run that Diaw to Marion lob EVERY time Kieff gets the ball top of the key - to either Warren, Leuer or Chandler, depending who screens.

Tucker is our defensive stopper off the bench, playing back-up 3 and 4 and only in short spurts. He and Price only come in when we need a stop/there's foul trouble/we need some physicality to send a message.

As others have said, we need more movement, plain and simple. The same mistakes we had last year with Dragic, Bledsoe and Thomas (and Green) playing hero ball with iso after iso is the same this year.

Run a friggin play for Len. The dude can score inside and if he doesn't he draws contact. He takes hits and keeps going, reward him by running a play for him!!

And Knight gets pulled whenever he takes a 22 footer when a step-back 3 is there for the taking, my god that is infuriating.

1. If you don't play defense ... you don't play
2. Box out and rebound ... if you don't put a body on your man ... you don't play
2. Fast break on all missed shots.
3. Our standard half court play is getting Len the ball on the low block. Len will take majority of shots (18-20 per game)

Ball movement and more specifically, (and you guys don't talk about this enough) but moving without the basketball. Nobody standing and watching one guy dribble the ball would be my emphasis.

I don't think I'm quite prepared to be an NBA level coach at this time.

Roster remains the same?

Run some plays, especially involving Booker, Warren and Len
Play young guys more
Tucker and Price used only for limited minutes to weary opposing team best scorer with intense defence
Kieff play against bench unit with hope he won't suck and could increase his value a bit

Could anybody see Hornacek making this kind of statement? Is this what our team needs?

Well I don't think he is in the position to be able to say anybody could be traded. I think with 25 years of nba coaching experience and 15 years experience as a head coach in the league, I could see him making it. I'm not sure I see Carlisle making that statement in his third year as a head coach either.

I've mentioned a couple of times I think Carlisle is the best coach in the league too.

The thing is, when you are among the coaching elite, those guys are hard to find. People will just randomly say "we need an experienced hard nosed coach" or whatever but everyone starts somewhere. I don't think this team is ready to contend any time soon. For me I don't mind a young coach, and particularly a smart one like Horny to grow with the team. I don't think he has the best mix of players to really compete right now though...I think they need to grow, or just get more experience being leaders and their iq goes up. I don't think Knight or Bledsoe are ever either one of the best two players on a championship caliber team though. MAYBE a long shot one of them could be.

But Sarver will likely constantly turn over the coaches and roster like he has since he showed up and slowly ripped down the SSOL team that the Colangelos put together.

There is rarely a quick fix in the NBA.

Hell no.

I remember last season and the year before that, Hornacek's always said that he loves PJ Tucker so much and that the main reason he likes Tucker so much is because Tucker will yell and scream at the team so that Hornacek doesn't have to since he doesn't have the balls to do anything like that.

Considering his decreased productivity, the only reason Tucker may still a Sun could be because of that...to do the screaming and yelling that a coach's supposed to do.

1. if he's interested, I hire Chauncey BIllups as an assistant coach. his two jobs: ball movements and guards
2. I call Kieff and tell him not to show up for games, only practices. I write it into my contract so I have full authority there. If he shows up to play at practice, he can suit up when I think he's ready
3. Ronnie Price start my first game. Both Bled and Knight will play off the ball next to him. They can worry about scoring from that vantage point. RP rations out the shots. I tell McD I need another true distributor just in case.
4. TJ Warren will be the primary backup 4 behind Jon Leuer. Less Telly; we need the defense. Booker will back up PJ. More Len. May even start Len/Chandler together against teams like Memphis and Chicago.
5. I need an anger translator, since I don't get mad when people make mistakes. Enter Rasheed Wallace. All he does is scare the daylights out of the youngsters.
6. I don't make substitutions when guys go cold. I do it when they lose the game. It's about the theory, not the circumstances, and the theory is that the best guys win

Usually agree with most things you say, but kinda glad you're not coach mate! :D
