He can potentially be our Leonard, and provide elite perimeter defense against the best scorers in the league.
For me, I'm pretty close to considering KO untouchable.
Nobody is "untouchable." John Wall isn't. It all depends on the deal available. But, I agree that I'd have no particular interest in trading Oubre.
That said, I don't think "Oubre's tools are elite" in the slightest. For one thing, he has zero right hand -- and I mean zero. But, his *athleticism* is elite, and he seems to be very smart and to be concentrating. I like him a lot.
Kawhi Leonard, however -- that's a big-time stretch as a comparison, at least at this point. Leonard played 2 years of college ball, and he played way more minutes as a Freshman than Kelly did. He came into the league a much better schooled player than Oubre, and he was absolutely terrific his rookie year -- much better out of the gate than Kelly has yet shown himself to be. He was an elite SF as a rookie! The only thing he didn't do as a rookie is shoot a lot.
He also averaged 24 minutes a game; Kelly's averaging 11, though of course that's going up lately, and I hope his minutes will continue to go up. I'd love him to become a star, you bet, but at this point comparing him to Leonard is dreaming -- a nice dream, but still....
He probably won't be as good as Leonard, no. But for this team to ever become a force to be reckoned with, they need to find a way to slow down the elite wings of the league (George, Melo, James, Durant, Harden, Leonard, etc). I don't have the stats in front of me, but to my recollection every one of those guys has pretty much spanked the Wizards repeatedly over the last few years. And it'd be even worse going against them in a 7-game playoff series.
Oubre is the only player on the team with the potential to become that type of 'stopper' - of course you never really stop those scorers, but the best defenders can at least make it tough on them. Wall and Beal don't have the length, Porter doesn't have the quickness or strength. Oubre is the closest we have to all of those things in one package, and he's still only 20yo. With how rare those types of players are, I wouldn't want to include KO in trade offers anytime soon.
