After two months of the season, it’s clear that Karl-Anthony Towns doesn’t just have the potential to be the best player in this year’s draft, he’s got a chance to be the next piece in the greater evolution of the game. As the game has evolved toward front court versatility, Towns appears to be the embodiment of the future. Which is all very good news for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Towns’ jump shot from the elbows is automatic and he has even begun to add a three-point shot as the trail guy in transition. His footwork in the post is incredibly fundamental, finishing off of two feet almost every time allowing him to pivot out if he doesn’t create a shot for himself or find an open cutter. His ability to move in open space makes him a good finisher on pick-and-rolls even if he isn’t catching many lobs. As a result, he is scoring at 0.90 points per possession (PPP) or higher on post-ups, spot-ups, and as the roll guy in pick-and-rolls all while maintaining an extremely low turnover rate.

Towns’ versatility will allow him to play several different styles on offense, alongside a variety of different lineup combinations. You can surround him with four shooters and let him operate in the post or on pick-and-rolls. You can play him at the elbow and surround him with slashers, cutting to the basket with plenty of open space in the paint. Or you can play him alongside another post player and work a beautiful high-low game since Towns has great vision and is able to make quick passes from the elbow.

Towns is the type of talent that should be difficult for an organization to waste but then again, the Timberwolves never really surrounded Kevin Garnett with enough talent to seriously compete for a championship. That’s why Minnesota is on the clock to find the right balance between patience and urgency in assembling the right talent around Towns and the right style of play in order to maximize their chances of squeezing through that championship window. To do that, they need to make several key adjustments.

I love KAT. He is amazing. I hope he stays a lot of years in Minnesota.

The kid is so talented, he can do it all, he is kinda funny though.
He reminds of a gayer Tim Duncan, the way he runs the floor and his gestures are funny.

Loved his demeanor at halftime and post-game when interviewed. Despite his great performance he was still highly critical of himself. That's the mindset you need to become really great.

Another Rookie of the Month award.

Towns, who also earns his second straight Kia NBA Rookie of the Month award, led all first-year players in scoring (18.6 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) and ranked second in blocks (1.56 bpg). He recorded eight point-rebound double-doubles in December and produced eight games with at least 20 points. Towns shot 55.3 percent from the field for the month and made at least half his shots in 14 of 16 games.

We have ourselves a potato, but still no steak. If we look at where we are in terms of a legit starting line up, it would be a stretch to suggest ...

Rube/Prince #5/#4 ... Wiggins #3 ... KAT #2 ... still no legit go to guy that I see. For all the losing and drama, we just don't have an elite 2-way player. Maybe KAT will get there, but even so, I'm not seeing anyone who can move to #2 right now.

KAT is 20. He will get there, he's already shown some pretty encouraging stuff on both ends.

Rookies aren't supposed to be as good as he's been.

Towns is an elite 2-way player.

And he has not even played half a season yet.

This. Towns is the real deal. He's going to get there in his game. Wiggins, IMO will get there as a scorer as well, but KAT will be our best player. He's someone who will get his in a more natural way then Wiggins.

Agreed, he should be Kevin Love-ing it up on offense at this point.
