Jodie Meeks next season

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Tue Jan 5, 2016 5:53 am

Is it important that the Pistons find a way to get Jodie Meeks off the books next season?

Since Stanley Johnson can play backup SG minutes, I think that 8M is better served on other needs.

Any creative ideas to get rid of his deal?

With the current rotation I'd see Meeks taking minutes from Stanley and I wouldn't want to slow his development.

I want Dinwiddie back! :(

But, I forgot Meeks was on the roster. KCP, Stanley, and Morris all are more versatile than him on both sides of the ball.. I'd like to move him I guess

I'd dangle him all off-season...

That assumes we sign Batum & retain BJ though.

I believe KCP, Batum & Stanimal would be quality on the wing with Mook capable of playing SF if needed and RJ playing some SG minutes (plus we'd have Bullock riding the pine)

It's honestly too soon to tell with Meeks. We gotta see how he changes the dynamic when he returns first

I was really happy when Meeks signed with us, but he's just been injured the whole time.
A healthy meeks is exactly what this team needs off the bench, but we've never had that. If he can stay healthy for a stretch, we could move hi, but right now it'll be hard

He'll be the back-up 2-guard. Stanley will be a full time SF, Mook is starting SF back-up four. I could see him traded next season some time though, because we're capped out after the Dre signing, and wouldn't want to re-sign him with bird rights, but wouldn't want to see that camp money just go away. So trade his expiring deal for a longer term deal with the similar yearly hit.

He'll find a way to get injured

If Reggie gets some minutes at the 2 guard spot to open up a little more time for Brandon Jennings that's even more reason the team needs to shed Meeks contract.

I wouldn't mind parting ways with him and drafting a 2/3 to groom, while playing Jennings/Stanimal backup SG minutes.

R. Jackson/B. Jennings
K. Caldwell-Pope/Jennings-Stanimal/Rookie
M. Morris/S. Johnson/Rookie
E. Ilyasova or FA?/M. Morris/A. Tolliver
A. Drummond/A. Baynes

When we got Meeks it was pretty much a signal to me that SVG was perfectly aware we weren't going to be able to land any premier or even second tier options in free agency, so he overpaid to get a third tier guy before he had any other offers to consider (recall we got him on day one of free agency).

I certainly hoped he would help our spacing and give us a guy who could shoot. My goodness has that worked out poorly.

Add it to the list of moves and decisions SVG has made that haven't worked out all that well. He's helped us as a coach and had a grace saving trade of Jackson last offseason that Bower probably deserves tons of credit for, but his run as an executive so far has been mixed to put it very kindly.

But yeah, this one hasn't worked out. I don't know how important it is to get him off the books, we appear to have lots of flexibility and options to mull over either way.

Meeks is injury prone. It's his 3rd season in a row getting injured

I thought Meeks was a good signing but dang the guy is always hurt and seem to take a while to get accustomed to the game after he is back. I thing he is gonna stay the duration of his contract unfortunately.

No one is going to trade for a damaged goods in Meeks. We're stuck with him unless we want to pull another Ben Gordon which is something Joey D would do.

But man, the curse in Detroit really is real though. Meeks was lights out during his Lakers tenure and now once he got here, he has been largely nonexistent. Detroit really hates shooters. Even Ersan is starting to feel it with his % showing a noticeable drop along with Mook.

I'm surprised we don't run pick and Pops more often actually. Our offensive scheme with the starters have been so traumatic.

His injuries are bad luck, but I don't know if they are necessarily indicative of him being 'injury prone' as the injuries don't seem to be related to each other. I do expect he will be off his game for the rest of the season, but don't mind him being with us and possibly contributing next year, especially considering the fact that he'll be considered a net minus in the trade market until he proves himself. With his potential for coming back and being a solid contributor compared to where his value is, you've gotta hold him.

I'm fine with giving Meeks one more shot to prove himself. If he can get back to being an elite shooter than he will give us a very deadly bench. On the other hand, we could give all of those minutes to Jennings (with RJ playing SG) and SJ so I can see both sides of the debate. I'm fine with whatever SVG decides.

I hope that Meeks returns this season and lights it up, propelling us to the playoffs....and in the off-season Charlotte take him in the Batum Transaction

Meeks was really good the last few weeks of last season, hitting 3s and getting to the line at will. Considering he likely has no trade value whatsoever it would be silly not to give him decent minutes when he returns.

I dunno, if he somehow gets healthy his contract isn't outrageous under the new cap. I really don't like Stanimal playing a lot of two and I doubt Jennings will be back.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

You guys are not appreciating Meeks. We are UNDEFEATED this season when Meeks has played. No other player on the Pistons has had that effect.

Perhaps we can wait to see how he plays when he comes off his injury. We need shooting and he's a really good shooter. I don't really want to give Stanley time at the 2 that much unless he shows he can shoot the ball with consistency. Which he certainly has not.

Everyone believe it or not, he has played a pretty fair amount at the 2. We don't have a backup 2.
