20 reasons the Pistons should PAY and keep Brandon Jennings

Post#1 » by vic » Tue Jan 5, 2016 1:51 pm

1. with the recent rule changes after the Pistons won their last championship, the NBA has become a small ball, space and pace, point guard driven, three-point shooting driven league. keeping BJ allows the Pistons to compete with elite teams

2. with both RJ and BJ playing PG, the Pistons have 48 minutes of all star level talent at the point guard position. very few teams can compete with that even in this era of great point guards.

3. rJ and BJ complement each other perfectly. RJ gets to the paint at will and can throw lobs to Drummond. BJ shoots threes at will, pushes the pace, and can kick out to any shooter and transition or in half court. RJ makes Drummond play better. BJ makes the rest of the team play better. It's a great and unstoppable combination of point guards.

4. His unconscious three-point shooting and transition and then have court when he opens up the game for the whole team, kind of like how Steph Curry does with the Warriors.

His unconscious three-point shooting and transition and in half-court when he opens up the game for the whole team, kind of like how Steph Curry does with the Warriors.

5. When playing bJ and RJ together, the Pistons can assemble a killer small ball lined up, just like the "cheat code" lineup of the Golden State Warriors.

BJ/RJ\KCP\ SJ\Morris

6. the above lineup can also be used as a counterattack to the hack a Dre strategy used by Teams that want to slow the game down and steal possessions. Hack a Dre would be Over immediately, if coaches knew that the Pistons would put a small ball Golden State Warriors style lineup on them in retaliation.

7. A "best five" lineup of RJ\BJ\KCP\Morris\Drummond can compete with any team in the league in the 4th quarter.

8. Brandon Jennings brings a high level of energy, talent, swag and confidence to the entire team. He is a performer. he has a "performers" mentality so he is not as up-and-down as some of the other stars on the team. RJ and drum are superstar players, but they are not as consistent because they depend on athleticism and emotion. BJ is a performance artist and he will make it a more consistent team.

9. Vinnie Johnson. Nuff said. Pistons history. From VJ to BJ. BJ is not just a microwave he's an extra kitchen.

10. Cap Space is going up, PAY the MAN.

11. At 27 years old, he's a veteran and he's ready to win, and believe it or not he brings another level of maturity to the team.

12. He's the closest thing to Steph curry and the only way the Pistons will be able to compete with the dynasty that Golden State is building over there.

13. RJ was brought to the team because BJ got injured. If RJ gets injured, there will be no need to worry because BJ is on the team. In an SVG offense that is so dependent on talented point guard play, being without a extra talented point guard is not an option. So having two is the only option.

14. SVG will sleep easier and he will never have to panic again, knowing that he has 48 minutes of supertalented point guard play, and an all-star level back up even if one of them gets injured.

15. If your offense is dependent on a point guard, it would make sense not to have to run them into the ground. With BJ helping RJ, they both can have a good distribution of minutes.

16. BJ strikes fear in the hearts of starting point guards... Backups? Forgetaboutit

17. Phoenix messed their PG situation up w/Dragic, look what happened to them.
Milwaukee messed their pg situation up, w/Knight look what happened to them.
Boston picked up a super talented scoring pg off the bench in Isaiah Thomas, all of the sudden they are one of the top teams in the East. Pg is an important position to get right with the new defense rules in the league.

18. Your future starting lineup?
RJ\KCP\SJ\morris\Drummond
Jennings wins 6th Man of the year for the next five years.
Jennings reunites with Ilyasova to drain threes on the league for the next five years.

19. Don't forget that SVG's style of offense is dependent on good three-point shooting. BJ and Ilys offense off the bench is going to hurt a lot of teams.

20. The Pistons just went from the worst bench in the league to one of the best the league, just by adding BJ. You need that if you want to win championships. The starters specialize in defense, and they are one of the top starting lineups in the league. Adding an offensive minded bench that is also one of the tops in the league makes for a tough team to beat.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

If Brandon would stay for $8-10 mil per season, then it is a no brainer and the team can cut Blake loose then keep Dimwiddle as 3rd stringer.

Eventually, there will be times in certain games where BJ and RJ both play together in the back court. Now, that will be an exciting time. Sort of like when Vinnie would play with Dumars or Isaiah.

This is something a lot of people around the league, and even some Piston fans dont seem to realize. The starting group on this team is amazing and statistically a top starting group. The one key thing that has been just killing the team was the worst bench in the league.

I agree whole-heartedly that the Pistons should resign Jennings to a nice fat contract if he is clearly recovered from his injury, and we go deep into the playoffs with his help.

If our bench plays even at an average level in comparison to the rest of the league this team can win 60 games. Thats how good our starters are.

Jennings is exactly what the bench needed. Look at how well Baynes played last night. That is not a coincidence.

Jennings will want his own team, like Reggie did in forcing his way here. Jennings is one of the top 30 point guards in the league, meaning he should be starting somewhere and paid to start somewhere. I know it's crazy, but I only wish Joe Dumars signed him to a four year contract - so we'd be able to cash in via trade now rather than seeing him walk for nothing as a UFA in the off-season.

It's gonna take more than that to resign him. I'd be willing to go to $13 million.

Yeah, even if we offered Jennings a matching contract to Reggie's, he'd take someone else's money so he could start. He seems to want 2 things:

1) New FAT contract
2) To start again

it is bad blood. jackson wants at least 30 minutes, jenning does not accept 18 minutes. both are horrendous defenders, so can't play together.

celtics plays with two point guards, but one of them (sometimes both) are great defender.

Jennings want a fat check. He's missed out since his rookie campaign since the Bucks rejected him.

He's due for a fat one.

Jennings has looked better than expected defensively. I think that extra weight has made him a tad slower on offense, but the extra strength has made him a tad better on defense too. I also think Reggie has proved capable of being a really good defender when he puts his mind to it. But he expends so much energy on offense having the ball so much that he often has nothing left for defense. So if Jennings were to take over at PG when in the game together, Reggie should have more energy for defense and it could work for 10-15 mpg.

Reggie can play 20 min at PG and 12 at SG. Jennings can play 30 min at PG and still be 34 mpg for whoever is at SG.

With this system so reliant on the PG position, it makes sense to invest extra there to make sure we always have top notch play at that position. Also when you consider we are set at SF with 2 quality players combining for only 8m of what will be a 100m cap, that affords us the ability to spend more at another position.

Someone questioned whether Gores would be willing to pay luxury tax. Gore's has two goals, I believe. Make this team a winner and increase the value of the franchise. I think he will pay Jennings top dollar if he and SVG see him helping accomplish those goals.

This next game vs BOS would be a good game to try the 2 PG look vs Thomas/Bradley. Jennings is a good matchup for Thomas and Reggie can guard Bradley off the ball.

There are plenty of minutes to go around in a 9 man rotation.

Hindsight is 20/20 but you're right... imagine if he was the 4 year deal and Josh Smith was the 3 year deal. :banghead:

I'm sold, I just hope we can convince him to stay. I agree that minutes shouldn't be an issue, there are plenty to go around, but I also worry that he'll want his own team, like Reggie. Though, in Reggie's case, he wasn't getting minutes or touches while Westbrook was healthy, here, BJ should be getting plenty of both. I knew this would happen, if Jennings came back healthy and playing well he would elevate us ( and his stock) which is good, it's exactly what we need to happen, but now we're afraid to go back to life without him. I'm still worried that we make a push for the playoffs with him, but then are unable to resign him in the offseason. I'll be watching this with great anticipation going forward.

This is sounding better and better. One thing that may be of concern an outside thought of sorts, is SVG better not pull some kind of PHX move and start the two together. I know its an outside concern but that would make me vomit.

That is not a sustainable lineup over the course of a season. I hate midget back-courts. I love our current big one.

SVG appreciates defense and intensity more than anything on a team. They can't start together but they can finish games together.
