From realgm newswire.....

According to one league executive, “You’re going to see (the Nets) start making moves.”

The Boston Celtics own the first round pick of the Nets.

“Oh, I definitely think Brooklyn’s going to be one of the more active teams leading up to the deadline,” one NBA source said. “They’re already working. They don’t have a draft position that they’re trying to protect, so they’re going to be out there trying to make something happen that can get them better now and have the right effect down the line. Look at where they are now. That’s a tough sell to a free agent who wants to win. They have to get better or at least show they’re on the upswing.”

I expected this too. Along with the giant cap jump theyre going to get along with JJ cmoing off the books....theyre not going to just sit around and watch us take their top 5 picks and flourish. They might have to overpay for it more than a team with more leverage would...but I can see them trying to bring in some younger guys with potential talent that the rest of the league is sleeping on or looking over for the most part. RHJ was a hit I think, wanted Ainge to draft him. I can see them moving Lopez and using his value to bring some other guys in. Then you always have the players out there with no real location loyalty and will go to the highest bidder. So this is the biggest reason why I wanted the Celts to tank themselves and put their future into their own hands rather than just hope and assume Nets wont be proactive at all in getting better till the 2019 season

A LOT of teams will have cap space this offseason, not too worried about Brooklyns space considering how on earth are they going to make moves to get better when they have no real assets?
I mean Lopez/Young/RHJ have value.... No one else on that roster has value and if they move those guys it's to try and cobble a few different players together to try and win more games which may/may not work.

Yah I can't see Brooklyn pulling anything pit of their ass and bringing in a guy like Brandon Jennings or Lawson without giving up one of Lopez, RHJ or Young in the process considering they have nothing of value as is and Houston or Detroit aren't just going to sell those guys for nothing to help Brooklyn out. I mean Houston may with Lawson, but still what are they looking at for a return? Sloan? Ellington? Larkin? I see that hurting the Nets not helping th considering Lawson recent issues.

Thur best move would be to swallow their pride and move older guys for low draft picks - which are better than no draft picks. Lopez for the Dallas pick!

Even Lopez for Lee Dallas, Boston 1sts and Philly 2nd could be a good trade for both teams at the deadline. Brooklyn gets 3 rookies to groom and we get Lopez, considate some assets and improve our Brooklyn pick in 16 and possibly beyond.

That Dallas pick is gonna be blah, ain't it? What a season for the rest of the West to be this weak. Ugh.

Sacramento is the only chance that realistically had a chance of stealing that last playoff spot from Dallas...ugh.

Maybe Danny can pull off another Rondo-type trade to Dallas that will mess up their rhythm/chemistry. Maybe Celtics can give them TWO-TIME ALL-STAR, ONE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION David Lee for free. (This I believe is what the Warriors inadvertently did to us, btw. By dumping Lee on us, Brad was forced to play him when he could just go to Zeller, Jerebko, Crowder, and even Mickey for those minutes.)

Nets are now pure ass with Larkin as their starting PG. This pick has great potential to be #1.

Yup. Can't even remember their other PG's name so I just call him Slava Medvadenko. I know Slava wasn't a PG, but it amuses me.

People on this board crapped on Jarrett Jack but I believe he was there second best player and kept them in many games. That loss hurts them very badly.

15 games under 0.500. Nets need to win better than 40% now to get to 30 wins. thats a little comforting.

New Orleans lost again tonight (to the Mavericks of all teams). Still only one win ahead of Brooklyn. Before they decide to tank the season, we should offer them some discounts on our extra players. Maybe facilitate a trade for them with some of our second rounders.

Heck, I would even go further. Provided that they agreed in essence to throw in the towel for the season (by not making any additional trades), in exchange for Lopez I would give them back their 2018 1st round pick as well as remove our option to swap 2017 picks.

This would pretty much guarantee a bottom 2 record for the Nets this year (and hopefully at least a top 3 pick this summer if the ping pong balls don't screw us) and give us an all-star caliber center. Would also make us look much more attractive to potential free agents this summer. From the Nets perspective, they could get a two year head start on their rebuild by actually having a reason to be bad now.

I know there will be those who say that is the worst idea ever and that we must hold onto all the Nets picks at all costs, but I disagree. I would rather do what we can to ensure one great pick than wind up with 2.5 mediocre picks. Because I REALLY don't see a Lopez led Nets team finishing with even a bottom 5 record this season. They are currently only three games from the 8th worst record, and the teams ahead of them haven't set their eyes toward the draft yet. But remove Lopez from the equation and the Nets have far and away the worst roster in the league, imo. They would have a devil of a time winning much more than 5 more games the remainder of the season.

The fact that I think the odds of a better player than Brooke Lopez being available in either the 2017 or 2018 draft (at least where the Nets will likely to be drafting) are remote at best is a secondary consideration but I think is likely true as well.

Just to clarify, the two Nets picks would be in place of (not in addition to) the picks in the trade idea I was quoting.

I was contemplating a similar trade a few days ago but I had Lopez/Young/perhaps another player going to other teams and the Celtics getting some compensation perhaps in terms of future picks. I just don't trust Lopez enough. The Nets losing their PG makes this sort of trade less necessary since now their is more of a chance the Nets finish worse than at least I was expecting last week.

More importantly, I strongly believe you win championships in the NBA by having a roster that collectively outperforms their contracts by a wide amount especially if you aren't spending like crazy...

If you have a David Lee making 14 million and he performs like a 3-4 million dollar player, you have to make it up elsewhere. The Warriors did last year with Curry and Green severely underpaid and other players like Barnes on a rookie deal underpaid as well. Barnes is perhaps about to be overpaid next year but he was underpaid last year since he was still on his rookie deal. Curry/Green crazily underpaid then.

Right now the Celtics may have a few players underpaid but its not buy a ton and at best Lopez is probably fairly paid or slightly underpaid.

What I'm saying pretty much holds for all teams... really the exception is teams that can somehow spend like crazy which the Celtics won't be doing anytime soon.

When the Spurs won it Leonard/Duncan severely underpaid. Leonard is clearly performing at a top 5 level right now so he is underpaid and Aldridge took a discount as well.

With the way Curry is playing, he may literally be worth 50 million this year and he is being paid around 11 million I believe. Hard to beat teams like Golden State/SA in a series with Lopez making 20+ million.

It sucks that this draft may not be that good overall since it is golden opportunity to get players on good rookie contracts.

No thanks. I'll take my chances with Brooklyn being horrendous for what looks like a very deep 2017 draft class and a 2018 class that already has a franchise player in DeAndre Ayton. Based on past history and his extensive current usage, there is also an above average chance that Lopez will miss a substantial portion of at least one of the following two seasons.

I would however offer them Kelly Olynyk and Jonas Jerebko for a pick swap in 2019 as well as their unprotected 2020 pick.

Return to Boston Celtics
